Guest guest
Isn't it pretty normal for many teens (usually those who are what used to be called the alternative group) to have numerous body parts pierced and to rarely bathe. In my younger days, Hippies used to do the same thing and they were never considered disturbed, just part of growing up. So, is lousy personal hygiene during the teen years really such a BIG deal? Guest guest
Deb, I would tend to agree with you. I guess the question is what kinds of things was she doing for her to have to see the person who diagnosed her. In my case, my daughter was " normal " until 18 when she started acting out. She had been a straight A student and a perfect child from the day she was born. Never in trouble, impeccable manners, was Miss RI teen when she was 17. Got into an excellent college and then started rebelling against me or just acting crazy. And it has continued to greater and lesser degrees until the present and she is 31 now. I have friends whose kids were alternative and they have all grown up with no problems and are happily married with good jobs and children of their own and are now " main stream " America. My daughter, by all who accounts was the most likely to succeed and she is the one with the biggest problems.
Guest guest
That's the question I have about all of this. Isn't a lot of this stuff fairly common for some teenagers? Other than the cutting/suicidal threats - many of the things listed are things that lots of teenagers do, particularly the " alternative " group. Kids who were considered " burnouts " when I was in high school ( a looooong time ago) did these things and most have grown up to be healthy, productive, normal adults. That's why I'm struggling so much with this diagnosis for my 14 year old daughter. How much of this is just stuff that she'll grow out of - with appropriate guidance and counseling and parenting? Guest guest
The piercings may be normal, but fabulously poor hygiene is often a warning sign of depression. Meredith
