Generally, doctors decide that insulin is necessary when pills stop

working to appropriately reduce BGs and you're seeing too many high

numbers with attendant diabetes-related complications. However, more

recent thinking is that it's better to start insulin sooner, rather than

later. I have at least one lengthy article to this effect which I'd be

glad to email you if you'd like to read it and show it to your doctor.

Insulin gives the best control, once you learn your appropriate

carb/insulin ratio -- although few doctors understand this dosing

system, it works far better than the one-size-fits-all system most of

them prescribe.

Also, sulfs will " burn out " your beta cells eventually, which is another

reason insulin needs to be started. Far better to start insulin early

and preserve those betas!

Vicki, LADA type 1 diagnosed 1997, UL and Humalog insulin and lotsa

testing, no complications.

Forgot to add to previous post.. the Glyburide that you're now taking is

a sulf. (sulfonylurea class of pill).

Thanks Vicky, for clarifying what I could not. :)

I too have read that insulin should be started earlier, and from what I have

seen and heard, it sounds actually like a good idea...I am getting less

afraid, talking to others on insulin, so when my turn comes, I will not take

it as a 'failure' but rather just another way I can save myself grief of

complications. You and others on insulin give hope to us who are not yet.

blessings.
