Guest guest
It is my understanding that the arm is not the best place to test because it can vary significantly from the finger tip reading. This is due to fat and muscle in the arm and glucose levels can be different due to how the muscles may utilizing the glucose. The fingertip doesn't go through that process so by the time the blood gets down to the fingertip it is a more reliable reading. This is what I learned in class. Research it though on the net if you need a more complex explanation or speak with your doctor. I've read that as much as a 20% difference can be seen. This was the reason given us because they wanted us to take a reading immediately upon rising. By the time I shower and drive to work my glucose levels are already varying due to activity. That's interesting, because I'm sure when most (if not all)people go for lab work, the vials of blood are drawn from their arms, and not their fingertips. So your A1C and fasting blood sugar levels using f this blood- drawn from your arm, would be different from your finger tip measurements (on our home monitors). So I guess this helps explain why some people don't think their A1C reflects their home testing #'s- meter variations plus the blood difference. gail
