HI all,

About douching for Strep, Ureaplasma etc. and other vag. bacterial infections and how they can help. Not anything with the nonoxynol 9 in though, LOL and good ol' grandma's vinegar seems to be the best.. ;)

Dee~

Vaginal douche products effective on vaginal bacteria (from Dr. Jelovsek ) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Douching has been linked with actually causing more bacterial vaginal infections than it cures so it is not usually recommended on a regular basis. And yet physicians are quite aware that it can be useful in certain recurrent infection situations. This study tested 7 commercially available douche products against normal vaginal lactobacilli, the bacteria you do 'not' wish to kill off, and bacterial strains causing bacterial vaginosis such as

Gardnerella,

Mobiluncus,

Mycoplasma,

Peptostreptococcus,

and Ureaplasma,

group B Streptococcus, and

Candida yeast species. They found that the 4 products containing 'antiseptics' had inhibitory effects against 'all' 'normal' and 'abnormal' bacteria and yeasts with only a minute of contact time.

On the other hand, the 'vinegar' containing douche products

were effective inhibitors of the "bad" bacteria and did not seem to inhibit the "good" lactobacillus at all. This data seems to imply that vinegar douches may not be harmful and in fact may be beneficial for treatment of the OCCASIONAL vaginal discharge.

Abstract

Recently, vaginal douching has been associated with many health risks in women. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of commercial douche products against various vaginal microorganisms, including lactobacilli.

Seven commercial douches were tested against eight Lactobacillus clinical isolates and three type strains from the American Type Culture Collection. BV-associated bacteria included six strains of five genera: Gardnerella, Mobiluncus, Mycoplasma, Peptostreptococcus, and Ureaplasma.

Two isolates of group B Streptococcus, and three species of Candida were also tested.

The minimal inhibition concentrations and minimal contact times for these products against vaginal microorganisms were determined in broth cultures.

Four antiseptic-containing douche products showed a strong inhibitory effect against 'all' vaginal microorganisms tested with a short contact time (less than 1 min).

Three vinegar-containing douche products selectively 'inhibited' vaginal pathogens associated with bacterial vaginosis, group B streptococcal vaginitis, and candidiasis, but 'not' lactobacilli. (which we want and need. DT)

The antimicrobial effects of the commercial douche products varied among different brands and microbial species tested. Infect. Dis. Obstet. Gynecol. 8:99-104, 2000. © 2000 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
