Hi Helen,

Not all doctors are the same. I have a friend that her husband goes to the

VA. He has to see several of the doctors, heart, kidney, diabetes and he never

has any complaints about any of them.

Like I said it depends on where you are, and how you retired. Different areas

are different. Here is not so good. Your friends are among the lucky few, Helen

He was in during the Korean War and flew for 17 years with the national Guard

going into Viet Nam many times. He was Air Force stationed in a couple of places

in Texas and in Sacramento California., It is different for different areas I

suspect and also different branches of the service. My brother retired from the

air force in 1975 and doesn't go to the VA but has a military insurance that

allows them to use civilian Drs. Helen

When was your husband active duty military? I suspect this may have been

years ago, and military doctors have improved dramatically. In fact, I have

received excellent care from military doctors. The military physicians who

treated me can be characterized as outstanding, professional and dedicated.

As an example, one my doctors, a Navy Lieutenant, tracked down one of the top

orthopedic oncologists in the country and called him at his HOME to ask him

to take me on as a patient, even though his office said he was completely

booked and wasn't seeing new patients. (He did, and I became one of his

patients.)

My husband retired in October 2002 after a 20-year career in the Marine Corps.

As a military dependent, I was treated by competent, caring military medical

professionals. (And Navy Corpsmen pheblotamists can't be beat, don't even

feel the needle going in when they take blood.) Now that we are Retirees, my

health care has not slipped. Just yesterday I had my annual mammogram at the

Navy Hospital. I have been treated at Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune, Naval

Hospital 29 Palms and Luke Air Force Base Hospital.

My father was nearly killed by a military doctor. He came in complaining of

fever, abdominal pain, and nausea. The doctor gave him aspirin and sent him

back to the barracks. Later that night, he became so violently ill he had to be

carried to the base hospital for an emergency appendectomy. If the operation

had been delayed 10 min. it would have burst. You don't give aspirin to someone

with appendicitis, everyone knows that; yet this fine, upstanding

officer-and-gentleman doctor did it.
