I had an MRI on my knee on Saturday and I meet with the orthopedic

surgeon on Monday. I hope something can be done because I'm in a lot

of pain. I had an echocardiogram Monday and should get those results

tomorrow. (The tech was very busy taking still shot and marking up

the screen, but she wouldn't provide any info about what she was

seeing.) I'm supposed to be back in Carolina now, working on the

other house, but I just have to wait for info from the doctors.

I am really thinking hard about it, Vicki girl. As usual, my doctor

had me do the bloodword *after* my visit. (Not that he would have

taken the time to talk to me if the results had come in prior to my

visit.) The office visit consisted of me rattling off my typed-up

list of requested bloodwork (most of which he said I didn't need). He

billed me $154. As he dismissed me, I asked, " What about my heart? " I

reminded him that I have left ventricular hypertrophy and arrhythmias

(Potentially deadly ventricular arrhythmias? He has never told me.)

and that he said we would " monitor " that, and I wanted to know what

that monitoring consisted of. So he ordered another echocardiogram

for me.

I whined to my sister about the quality of medical care in rural

northern Arizona, and she said it is just as bad in metropolitan

Tucson.

Good luck with your knee. I know it must hurt. I hope they do something

soon.

Last night, for the first time in many weeks, I had a relatively pain-

free sleep. I really sympathize with folks who suffer chronic pain.

It really gets a person down emotionally. I get the MRI results

Monday.

Phyllis, as to your leg pain, is it in the thighs or the calves? Are

you drinking plenty of water, and have they checked your

electrolytes? My sister-in-law's severe, chronic leg pain was from

her blocked arteries. I hope they get to the bottom of it.

I've had 4 knee operations (between the two of them) and have had degenerative

arthritis for a long time. One knee has basically no cartilage, and at night, if

it gets a little cool, sometimes there is nothing that relieves the pain other

than my " thermal knee socks " .

Yea, my electrolytes are fine, they always check them. I drink water all

day. The chronic aching is in the calves and below the knee. I have a pain

if I push on the front of my thighs, which is probably the femoral arteries

that are blocked.

I went and read the study being done on Baycol and its effects on muscle

pain and they said you have to do a muscle biosopy to get results and some

other tests. So I will talk to the neurologist next week. They say it caused

myopathy and is difficult to diagnose.

Thanks,

Phyllis

Phyllis, if you have a sewing machine you could make your own with Polartek

and Velcro. I can get Polartek cheap from a bolt ends place here in

Portland. It usually costs about $15 a yard in regular stores but I can get

it at the outlet for $4 to $7.50 a yard (but for leg warmers you'd probably

need less than a quarter yard, it's 60 inches wide). They should be really

easy to make. (Maybe I can start a knee warmer business!)

I don't have the box, but I got them at CVS drugstore.

The tag says: Futuro Knee thermo comforter, size Large. They should be in most

drug stores.

I found them here for $7.59 doing a Google search:

Thanks, Dave. I tried to order them in Medium and they're temporarily

out of stock, but I'm hanging onto that link. My husband would like

them too.

You could make a fortune. Advertise them for arthritis, neuropathy, etc. I

will order some.

Overnight 5% lidocaine ointment for treatment of vulvar vestibulitis.

Zolnoun DA, Hartmann KE, Steege JF.

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of North Carolina School of

Medicine, Chapel Hill, North Carolina 27599-7570, USA.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of nightly application of 5% lidocaine

ointment for treatment of vulvar vestibulitis. METHODS: Over 17 months, we

assessed women presenting to our pain clinic for evaluation of introital pain;

61 women met the criteria for vulvar vestibulitis and participated in a

treatment trial. We measured daily pain and intercourse-related pain using a

100-mm visual analog scale. We compared ability to have intercourse and pain

ratings before and after treatment, and investigated whether prior treatment or

gynecologic comorbidities predicted response to treatment. RESULTS: After a mean

of 7 weeks of nightly treatment, 76% of women reported ability to have

intercourse, compared with 36% before treatment (P =.002). Intercourse-related

pain score was 39.11 (95% confidence interval [CI] 30.39, 47.83) points lower

after treatment (P <.001), with a decrease of 10.37 (95% CI 3.53, 17.21) points

in daily pain score (P =.004). We found no association between response to prior

episodic use of lidocaine and response to nightly therapy with lidocaine

ointment. Few patient characteristics predicted response to treatment; however,

women with interstitial cystitis and other vulvar conditions were least likely

to benefit. CONCLUSION: Long-term, nightly application of 5% lidocaine ointment

shows promise as a treatment for management of vulvar vestibulitis; a

randomized, double-blind, clinical trial is warranted.

Someone named recently posted on vulvodynia.com and shes taking desipramine (generic Normramine) and is about 98% better. You may have to try a few different things if you choose to go that way. Some have had success taking Elavil (not me), others have had success taking Neurontin and so on. Its not a one pill or one dose fits all disorder. I recently even tried Prozac since 2 ladies I am close with have had 100% success for one and 50% success for the other. I lasted 6 days on it before I thought my brain would squish out of my skull. Low serotonin can cause you to have more of a response to pain and stress makes some of us worse.

The specialist I saw at Shands gives all of his patients Elavil. It didnt help MY pain, but boy it helped with my outlook. I also tried Pamelor with no success and bad side effects.

How long have you been on Desip.?? Rememebr, it takes about 6 weeks for medications to really kick in. My dermatologist told me to always try somehting for at least 6 weeks, unless I get really bad side effects. So maybe you havent been on it long enough or you may have to increase or even try something different.
