Guest guest
Hi Amber, Transverse Myelitis is a sister disease to MS but the difference is TM effects only the spine and MS effects both the spine and brain. Most people that get TM end up getting MS also. I just happened to get diagnosed with both at the same time Transverse Myelitis Transverse Myelitis is a neurologic syndrome caused by inflammation of the spinal cord. TM is uncommon but not rare. Conservative estimates of incidence per year vary from 1 to 5 per million population. The term Myelitis is a nonspecific term for inflammation of the spinal cord; transverse refers to involvement across one level of the spinal cord. It occurs in both adults and children. You may also hear the term myelopathy, which is a more general term for any disorder of the spinal cord. Guest guest
Thank you for the info Crystal. I've got this too. What happened to me is I started going completely numb starting at the waist, which travelled down to my toes. Was barely able to walk, couldn't drive, etc. Almost paralized, and very scarey. Took almost a year to get the sensation back. Thankfully I fully recovered and wouldn't wish this on anyone. ~Amber [low dose naltrexone] FW:OFF TOPIC Info. on transverse myalitis .. Guest guest
Hi Amber - Your comment "Took almost a year to get the sensation back" might mean a LOT to a friend of mine, diagnosed with probable Transverse Myelitis last December, and told what function she didn't get back in 6 months probably wasn't coming back. (She's in hospital now after a 2nd attack, and testing for MS). She hasn't walked in 7 months. Could you please give me a bit more info on what happened in your case? Regards, Gayle
Guest guest
I hope your friend doesn't take the "6 months" platitude too seriously. I started getting numb at the waist and it proceeded rather quickly down both legs reaching the tips of my toes, so I was totally numb. Walking was extremely difficult and I accomplished this by sheer dent of will. It's kinda like your brain is telling your legs to walk, but they won't, so you gotta force them to. Sitting and doing nothing is very, very bad. I developed a kinda rocking motion to walk and sometimes had to resort to pulling on my pants legs to move them. Thought I had a badly pinched nerve so went to a chirpractor who was an idiot and did nothing to help me. I had no idea this problem had a name until the posts on the lists this week and a comment from my neuro. She said that most people only recover 50% so I was indeed fortunate and attribute it to being strong minded and forcing myself to walk. I don't know what else besides MS can cause this or if LDN can help (I would think it could). Keep us posted on your friend's test results. Is she getting any physical therapy? ~Amber RE: [low dose naltrexone] FW:OFF TOPIC Info. on transverse myalitis Hi Amber - Your comment "Took almost a year to get the sensation back" might mean a LOT to a friend of mine, diagnosed with probable Transverse Myelitis last December, and told what function she didn't get back in 6 months probably wasn't coming back. Guest guest
Amber & Gayle, I am currently visiting in Hawaii. I met a woman that told me last night that about 7 years ago her husband was sent home from the hospital with Transverse M. and told he had a 50% chance of survival. She was very scared and ended up going to her families chinese medicine doctor. He quickly came to their house and concocted a bunch of herbs and within a few of weeks there was no more sign of TM. The doctor is on the big Island near Kona and is still practicing. She says that if you go to one of these doctors it is best to ask what things they diagnose with. For instance, does he check your tongue, eyes, nails and hair? Apparently she has been to another chinese doctor that was not near as through as the one that cured her husband. He has performed very well on other items for her extended family as well. If you need his info, I will try and get it for you, otherwise if it is not possible to get your friend to Hawaii, then maybe you can find a good chinese herbalist doctor in the area. Guest guest
Dear Aletha, I saw your heart warming story about the the Chinese medicine doctor. Do you think that he can cure prostate cancer? If so I would go there in a NY minute. My best to you, Arthur RE: [low dose naltrexone] FW:OFF TOPIC Info. on transverse myalitis Amber & Gayle,I am currently visiting in Hawaii.
