Wow I wonder if myy aching hips which only started a few weeks aftre I started LDN has anything to do with the lactose filler they put in it at Park-Irmat? I am not lactose intolerant as far as foods , I would be surprised if lactose filler could be bad for my system but then it would explain the aches that make it hard for me to sleep at night. What do you all think?

[low dose naltrexone] LDN/MS symptoms

Jim, people seem to have different reactions to LDN. Have you been experiencing additional stress, have a cold, has it been raining? Any of these can affect your symptoms. Here's what Dr. Lawrence in the UK says about side effects.

Introductory Side-effects: There may be some initial transient, though temporary, increase in MS symptoms during the adaptive period when the LDN is first introduced. This usually lasts no more than one week but if symptoms are severe, or more prolonged, then the initial dose of 3 mg may be reduced to 2 mg until the anticipated improvements begin to develop.

Introductory symptoms, on starting this treatment, may include such as disturbed sleep, occasionally with vivid, bizarre and disturbing dreams, tiredness, fatigue, spasm and pain.

Symptoms related to increased endorphins: These may include such as nausea or constipation. These symptoms diminish naturally as the body adjusts to the increased endorphin level.

Symptoms related to previous Opiate use: On starting LDN the recent use of opiate analgesics will result in an opiate withdrawal syndrome, with increased pain, spasm, vomiting and diarrhea. These symptoms may be prevented by stopping all opiate analgesics at least two weeks before starting the LDN.

Symptoms related to the use of Lactose filler: If lactose filler is used in the capsules some individuals may be sensitive to this sugar and, usually after a few weeks of treatment, will develop diffuse but persistent muscle or joint pain. This may be avoided by using an alternative filler, such as calcium carbonate.

i'm not going to be home this weekend--one of our students that started out as a tech is graduating pharmacy school and we are going to graduation-- skip video clips should be up on the web page and he discusses fillers and I know he did on the audio.

the place is here http://www.low dose naltrexone.org/events.htm

having said that -- there are many other reasons why you can't sleep and the last one on the list is the filler in your ldn.

one of the reasons I had asked the list about the issue with EFA's and MS-- is last year I went on a search for a good EFA and settled on Nordic naturals -not just for Skip & I but for my goldens who are known to have hip issues as they get older. (They have a dog version) I know for all of us it has really helped -

the other thing when I went to the doctor -we had this whole ph thing happening and she put on bufferzyme and i have to tell you I slept better and if I won't so lazy I'd go get another bottle.

the other thing the whole Candida thing -i'm a dairy queen so it was really hard to give up some stuff but I do spend a lot time reading labels and cutting down my intake of sugar. i found low carb milk by hood that has only a few grams of sugar as opposed to 28 grams that you find in a glass of whole milk.

I'm very dubious of diets - i tried the south beach and got very sick but I'm all for balanced and paying attention to certain things. one of the issues with specific diets--like take for instance-the south beach diet- i felt so good-i stayed on the first part for three months-i felt great- and then i crashed and burned-

and then there's the fact that all of you are different -male female ages (different hormones doing different things) different cultures all these things come into play.

Nola,

I asked Skip about lactose filler and not being lactose intolerant an he said you could still be sensitive to the filler.

I do get my prescription filled at Irmat also and they said unless requested specifically by the doctor they use advicil (sp?)

That's all I know on that....

Nola,

That IS wierd. I asked them what filler was in my prescription, and they looked it up and said advicel and made the comment unless a doctor specifically asks for something other than advicel that is what they use. It's got me wondering too.

Annette thanks for commenting on this. I am a bit perplexed, then, as when I called Irmat the first time to get LDN, they asked specificaly if I had any problems with lactose, and I said no, lactose is ok with me and then they said "ok"..i assumed it was because they were going to use it for the filler. Maybe they just ask that routinely in case there is a problem with the avicel>? I maybe should cal lthem to see what filler they used for my LDN?

the reason advicil is use is because many compounders were using calcium. last year at the conf in ny skip (who worked on a calcium project for a drug company many moons ago) insisted it was a bad filler -this year at the conference he actually presented the evidence of an experiment that this students to prove this. He recommended advocil because we do a lot of compounding for people with all kinds of allergies and this was the best hypoallergenic filler there is

he won't use lactose and it was recommended at the conference not to use lactose because so many people are lactose intolerant.
