Guest guest
First suggestion - get a new neuro!! Ok now I know that is easier said than done, just had to say that. What a thing to do to a child!! How awful! Regarding hiding the cream: add a bit of water to make milk add sweetner and vanilla and banana (or other fruit that she can have more of as banana is very little even on Mike's lax diet) and freeze a bit to make a milkshake add vanilla and sweetner and freeze to make ice cream - this tastes almost exactly like " real " ice cream add cream to egg and fry make a cream soup - we have done this with both a broccoli soup and with chicken noodle (very little noodles) soup use the keto chocolate mousse recipe - tastes good and high in fat -cant remember the recipe but it might be posted at the ketorecipes group. make creamsicles - use cream and ketokoolaid (we use orange/banana - has a tiny bit of sugar in it) Mike isnt very fond of them but we have only tried once and I think it was just because it was a new thing. He likes is fave's right now. Freeze cream as ice cream, add to diet pop or koolaid to make an " ice cream " float. Hiding butter: soups are always good for hiding butter and oil I add any oil (melted butter works ok too as we dont have a whole lot of it) to Mike's ice cream Melted butter hides well in scrambled eggs (I use a spatula to scrape the plate afterwards to make sure I get everything) Make " butter candy " add sweetner and vanilla (or other " safe " flavor) to butter and freeze in fancy ice cube trays we have a bit more carb than you are working with so I make Mike pancakes and for him this is an all in one meal - cream, butter, egg, carb and oil. Someone would know better, but would it work to do this with pumpkin pancakes? What about using mayo for a few meals for veggie dip or mixing with chicken for chicken salad on a bed of lettuce? Another of Mike's fave's is the chocolate mousse recipe - I dont have it any longer but it might be posted on the ketorecipes board. It tastes good and is quite high fat even my girls loved it. Can you hide oil or butter in jello? I have never tried, thought just popped into my head. What about putting oil in popsicles? I have never been able to figure this out but I read it here somewhere. Hope some of this helps. Jenn Halina wrote: > We've finally started the diet!! I wish Kaitlynn was more > enthusiastic though. Guest guest
Also wanted to add that we have never given Mike carnitine. We have used acidophilis in the past (wrong kind tho as when we stopped seizures decreased and increased upon re-introduction) We want to start up on it again, just waiting to hear if the brand I found is ok. We also have some digestive enzymes but havent used them much as Mike refused them in the beginning, then we started meds weans and I didnt want to add anything to the " mix " to rock the boat. Still something we will do when we are done weaning a bit more. Just a side note - dont worry about " venting " here. Everyone understands - nice thing about this group - everyone " gets it " Things are very stressful and hard especially when starting the diet with little neurology support. My son's neuro wasnt as negative as yours, but complained that Mike wasnt getting adequate seizure control for the first 9 months and kept talking about adding another med. Then we weaned dilantin and he got much better control, she has stopped bugging me now, but has told me she isnt happy about those seizures still remaining. I am just ecstatic to see him down on meds without an increase in seizures! Jenn Halina wrote: > We've finally started the diet!! I wish Kaitlynn was more > enthusiastic though. Guest guest
Dear Halina, We started the diet at the end of February, my daughter, Kim is 9 years old. She was not crazy about the buuter and cream at first so I had to find a few ways to make it more appealing to her. All the idea I got where either from here or the Freeman's book. I make popsickles out the cream, I measure the grams and mix in a drop of sweetner and diet soda and then freeze them in molds. She gets one each meal. I use diet rootbeer and diet blackcherry and diet orange. She likes them. With the butter, I mix all the butter and cream in with the eggs in the morning and I microwave them, they are fluffy and good, a tad runnny but not bad. With the hot dog meal, I cut up the hot dog and melt the butter and give it to her in a bowl. For a few of the other meals I make butter lollipops, I thought these would be gross but she likes them. I melt the butter add sweetner and either one or two drops of vanilla extract or now I use Strawberry extract. I pour them in a candy lollipop mold and keep them in the freezer. We have all different molds, smile face pops, and ice cream cone pops, it is ALOT better than just eating butter straight at least she likes them better. I will try to think of more ways and if I do I will let you know. Hang in there and I would make sure to give the diet a good chance before I would abandon it. Oh, I remember how difficult those first few months were. Pam and Kim > We've finally started the diet!! I wish Kaitlynn was more enthusiastic though. Our first day was tough but we made it through. The next day Kaitlynn got her egg nog, well the first one which was a 1/3 strength was pretty easy to get down but when it got to the 2/3rd's strength it was tough getting it down for her. I even made a slushie with it and STILL she wouldn't drink it all. Today was food but she didn't want any part of the butter or cream! HELP! Guest guest
Halina, Sounds like your neuro WANTS you to fail..... I suppose then he can gloat about what a lousy idea the diet was! Our doc prescribed Carnitor (brand name of prescription l-carnitine), too.... but never had our daughter's blood levels checked. They (neuro and dietician) said the test was really expensive so they'd rather just put her on it because (they felt) " most keto kids need it " . Well, I did give it to her for 2 months but it gave her terrible diarrhea..... and another side effect that kids can have (although Katera did not) is stomach pain, by the way. I stopped and told them I would not give it to her unless they did the test and proved to me that she needed it. They didn't think it was that important, I guess, because they never mentioned it again and didn't order the test. I decided instead that I'd rather give her digestive enzymes..... we use HN-Zyme-Prime from Houston Nutraceuticals (www.houstonni.com ). I think that has helped a lot. Looks like Jenn gave you some really good suggestions for getting the fat in. I'd just suggest that you see that neurologist as little as possible and learn from the moms here. You sound very determined..... so hang in there, you can do it! Patti, mom to Katera..... age 5 (almost 6), Keto Kid since 10-10-2000. We've started the diet but I have a couple of questions We've finally started the diet!! HELP! She's registering ketones but without the fat it won't stay right? Her ratio is 3.5:1 and her Kcal/day is 1411. Today I was ready to strangle the neuro! He tells me (after agreeing to do the diet) that he's now thinking it's not a great idea. He was being so negative with Kaitlynn today asking her " do you like the cream Kaitlynn? Of course Kaitlynn shook her head no, then he asked do you like the butter Kaitlynn? Again no from her. He even asked if she liked olive oil. I mean what was this about but being negative? Now he prescribed me Carnitin ( I think that is what it's called) to help in the digestion of the fat, my question is, do we REALLY need that or is there something else I could use in the aid of the digestion of the fat? I'm just thinking that the neuro wrote out this prescription to discourage us from continuing the diet because when I found out how much it was I almost fell on the floor! He's a horrible, negative person when it concerns the diet. I didn't say much but I stuck it to him and asked Kaitlynn " Do you want to be on medicine again? Is there some sort of homeopathic digestive enzyme we could use instead of this Carnitine? I'm willing to give this a try and with the neuro's negativity I don't think Kaitlynn will give it an honest effort. I told him that there has to be a way for the butter and cream to be hidden in the food but he said that it's too much to hide. What about putting the cream in when I cook an egg? Well, I seem to recall asking him about this diet and he was NOT willing to do it whatsoever! Back then Kaitlynn was only 5! I'm so sorry for going on like this but he really upset me today! Guest guest
Hi Halina, Your neruo is terribly rude and obnoxious asking Kaitlynn those questions! Ignore his bad behavior, he obviously doesn't have a clue about how yummy some of the meals can be even with all that cream and oil. Surround yourself with positive keto people (like everyone here at this group) and you will do fine even with the neruos negative attitude. There are some great recipes in the files section here or you can go to the recipe site at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ketorecipes/ , they are a little easier to find by heading. A couple of Mallorie's favorites are Jane's spinach pie and pumpkin pancakes. In both of these recipes I have been able to get all the oil in the recipes and they taste great. On the pancakes I add extra alloted butter on top. There are a lot of other great meals and ideas too. We just started making the keto mac (zucchini) & cheese this week, it is so good. You can make cream soda, floats. I am going to try Jane's chocolate custard tomorrow, it sounds delicious. As far as the Carnitor goes some kids need it. It is usualy prescribed if your child shows a carnitine deficiency. Carnitine helps to metabolize fatty acids and to move toxins out of the cells. Mallorie has been on it in the past when she was on Depakote and it seemed to make her feel better. She has not been doing well lately so her doctor has called in a prescription to see if she will feel better on it. It is covered by our insurance. Did Kaitlynn's neruo prescribe Carnitor or just carnitine? You may want to check out http://www.carnitor.com to read more about it. Good luck and a great beginning to you and Kaitlynn. Guest guest
HI, I'M SORRY ABOUT YOUR STRUGGLE. BUT IT'S GREAT THAT YOU HAVE HELD YOUR GROUND WITH THE NEURO. THESE DOCTORS DON'T HAVE TO WATCH THEIR KIDS HAVE ALMOST CONSTANT SEIZURE AND WATCH THEM LOSE DEVELOPMENT FROM BEING SO DRUGED, DEAL WITH OTHER SIDE EFFECTS, OR WONDER WHAT IT'S REALLY DOING TO THEIR BODIES. NOT TO MENTION THE EFFECTS FROM THE SEIZURES, AND FORCE FEEDING MEDS DAY AND NIGHT. SORRY, IT GETS TO ME. I PUT THE CREAM AND THE BUTTER IN THE EGGS AND COOK IT ALL. IT TURNS OUT FINE AND MY SONS LIKES IT. I TRY TO DO MORE RECIPES THAT ARE ALL INCLUSIVE THAT WAY HE WON'T HATE BUTTER, OIL, AND CREAM FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE. WE JUST GOT THE NUMBERS AND RECIPE FOR " MAC AND CHEESE " FOR MY SON, HE LOVES IT. HE JUST GOT A BAVARIAN CREAM RECIPE FOR HIS SNACK, LOOKS LIKE CHOCOLATE MOOSE. IT IS TO SOON FOR THE DOCTOR TO WANT TO GIVE UP. THE NUTRITIONIST CAN HELP WITH DIFFERENT MEALS SHE WILL LIKE. TACO'S, SHRIMP,PIZZA, OF COURSE THEIR A LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN SHE'S USE TO BUT NOT TO BAD. I WISH YOU GUYS ALL THE LUCK IN THE WORLD.. HAS SHE IMPROVED WITH SEIZURE CONTROL YET? GOD BLESS, BOBBI HAMMETT P.S. YOU CAN ALSO PUT THE BUTTER IN CANDY MOLDS WITH A LITTLE FLAVORING, SWEETENER AND FOOD COLORING, CHILL AND MAYBE SHE'LL FIND IT A TREAT. Guest guest
Well, I agree with someone else's comments - fire the neuro!! That likely not being feasible - do your dammedest to prove him wrong! has been on diet four a half years and our neuro still goes on about diet being so unpalatable and he can't believe Jess is happy and healthy on it......geuss it just goes to show, much as they like to think they do, they don't know everything! How old is your daughter? What were some of her favourite meals? There are lots of ways to try to make it easier. We whip cream and oil, with sweetner and Bickford flavourings (they have all kinds of flavours that are keto-friendly), if you put in freezer it gets hard like ice cream, if you keep in fridge, it keeps consistency of whipped cream you would put on your fruit. Then rest of meal can be pretty " normal " . She might like the yoghurt recipe, sounds great but doesn't taste too bad - stir sour cream, oil, vanilla, sweetner together with some small chunks of fruit, peaches or strawberries work well. Stir and stir until you get consistency of yoghurt. Refrigerate. When you take out to use you will have to restir because oil will separate out. Of if in container with a lid, just shake before you take lid off and it will mix back in. With cheese (we use the cheese sticks Jess likes so much) on the side you have a full meal, no cream. But if more than half as much oil as sour cream it won't work well. In that case use mayonnaise on the side to make up some of the fat, works well to dip the cheese stick into it. Depending on the ratio, you can make pizza using pita bread as the base, pepperoni, grated cheese on top, nuke to melt cheese and " ice cream " for dessert. There is a chicken casserole recipe in the files that is really good, no cream, a whole meal in a bowl. All kinds of ideas, just takes a while to get creative. Best of luck! Guest guest
My son likes the cream in strong decaf coffee or whip the cream and layer it with sugar free jello in a cup. s favorite way to hide fat is to make ranch dressing, 45g mayo, 15g sour cream, 62 g 40% cream and then put fresh basil or some other herb or herbs in it to make it have a flavor they like. Then put it in a salad or dip hot dogs in it with celery or carrots. Of course adjust amounts to your specific amounts. Above all DON " T GIVE UP!!! It takes a few weeks of experimenting to find out what will work for your child. I agree your doc is a jerk! Our's told us the diet " wasn't safe " . Afterwards putting the butter over the scrambled eggs? I've got all the meal plans and I'm going to make a menu up for her. The neurologist wants to see Kaitlynn in a weeks time to see how she's doing on the diet and if she's not eating the cream and butter he said that he won't continue her on the diet! I'm so ticked at him right now! What he doesn't realize is he's given me MORE motivation to do it now! He also said when the child is younger, age 4 or 5 that it's much easier to do. Well, I seem to recall asking him about this diet and he was NOT willing to do it whatsoever! Back then Kaitlynn was only 5! > I'm so sorry for going on like this but he really upset me today! I will stop now but if anyone could let me know about the Carnitine I would really appreciate it. Thank you for those who made it this far. > Halina > > >
