Hello, my name is . I wil be 39 this month and on 9/15/04 was told that

I am diabetic. I have been lurking as well. Trying to read posts and

messages and websites to learn as much as I can. I just started diabetic class

tonight and it talked about carbs. They wanted me to take a general class first

but I told them that I need to learn about this whole thing with carbs more. I

really wanted to take all the classes in the same week but they said that my

insurance company will probably not pay for more than one class a week. So

they let me take the carb class first. Boy, did I learn alot. The biggest thing

was that I was not reading the labels correctly. I also learned that I don't

have to give up everything that I enjoy just count the carbs and know the

serving sizes.

I still have alot of questions. One being about supplements. I was told that

I should give up milk. So I want to take calcium supplements instead. Are

there other supplements that I should take? I know that I will need to talk this

over with my doctor when I go back this month. Do the supplements effect

your Blood Sugar?

My husband and I are fast food eaters. We eat out alot. This has been a

tough one to try to do away with. Trying though. I need to get into learning

how

to fix diabetic foods. Any suggestions on good cookbooks?

My reading on my Blood Sugar has really came down alot. On 9/15/04 it was

268 and my A1C was 10.4. WOW. Now my reading are all under 200. I test 3 to 4

times a day to get a feel of what I can eat and what I should not eat. My

highest reading has been 184 and my lowest has been 124. So hopefully I am

getting on the right track.

Thanks to everyone that participates in the group so that newbies like me

can learn more.

I live in Ohio and have been married to the same man for 20 years and have a

19 year old son and a 14 year old daughter. They have been really supportive

and willing to work with me on everything.

I look forward to learning more and hopefully be to the point that I can

look at a food and be able to say yes or no or how much.

Thanks for reading my post and have a great week.

Another newbie just told that I have diabetes

I still have alot of questions. One being about supplements. I was told

that

I should give up milk.

[, Bruce] Give up milk? Who told you that? Give up natures most

perfect food? True, milk has carbs, but not that many. Skim milk has

more than 2%, and 2% more than whole, and whole than half-and-half;

cream has none. Now if you have lactose intolerance along with

diabetes, that's another matter. I wouldn't say give up milk; just

figure the carbs in milk into your counting.[,Bruce]

My husband and I are fast food eaters. We eat out alot. This has been

a

tough one to try to do away with.

[, Bruce] Just avoid white bread, potatoes, and other starchy,

sugary things. Subway's Atkins wraps are both delicious and good for

you. [, Bruce]

Trying though. I need to get into learning how

to fix diabetic foods. Any suggestions on good cookbooks?

Subway's Atkins wraps are some of the worst foods for you, worst than

Mcs Fries etc. They are loaded with fat.

Re: milk. Our dr & nuritionist told us they LOVE milk (and ice cream) as part

of the diabetic diet (our 10 yr old daughter is type 1). They especially

recommend them as part of the bedtime snack process because of the protein

involved in addition to the carb.

But fat isn't the issue for us diabetics; carbohydrates are. But if you are

worried about the fat, just ask for them without the cheese and/or with a

lighter sauce.

fat is important for diabetics to consider that we are 4 times more

likely to get heart disease.

Carbs are energy and do not hurt us.

Sure, you don't want to eat a spaghetti dinnner with 3 pieces of

bread, that's carb overload.

But, you also don't want to eat 3 pieces of fried chicken.

It's a happy balance between fat, carbs, and other things.

I am 100% against the Atkins diet and feel that it will hurt

diabetics due to large amounts of fat (heart), protein (kidney), and

sodium (high blood pressure).

To each their own, but SUBWAY is not a healthy lifestyle. People

need to be educated about that.

Carbs make the blood sugar go up.

We don't want our blood sugar to go up.

Therefore we should minimize our intake of carbs.

Simple logic.

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for the information. I have never been told that I am lactose

intolerance. I don't drink alot of milk either. Maybe a glass at supper time or

maybe in the morning but nothing other than that. It was the first person at

the

Diabetic Clinic that I had an appointment with. I believe she was the nurse

there. She is the one that made a whole list of things that I needed to do.

Eating out....I learnt Wednesday at the class about bread. That I can get a

bunless whopper at BK and that the bread should be double the carbs if you eat

the top and bottom. I will have to try the Subway wraps. The family loves

Subway. Of course we use to eat double meat on our 12 " subs. No any more. lol

I will have to check into the Dummy cookbooks. Thanks for the suggestions.

Hi Tom,

Yes, that is what is on the paper. I wish that I could show this to

everyone. I am not kidding about it. That is what is written down.

This is also the reason that I asked about supplements because I could not

understand giving up milk and my calcium.

Hi Sue,

>Why were you told to give up milk?

I know that I was probably told but I didn't write it down and with 2 hours

of information I don't honestly remember. It is on a list of things for me to

do that she gave me. One of the first things on it. So we must have talked

(or at least I was suppose to listen) at the beginning of the meeting. I plan

on asking when I go to my next class on Tuesday. I will let everyone know what

I find out.

My doctor told me to subtract the fiber from the total carbs.

My doctor told me that the recent thinking is to look at total carbs,

since they will sooner or later be incorporated in your body.

She didn't say that she had high blood pressure or other sodium issues.

Besides, your body needs sodium; people have been known to die from sodium

deficiency.

Have you checked the sodium levels in milk?
