Could you talk alot about it with him? That there may be lines and waits for

the rides. If it has been three years, he may do much better with the whole

idea. I remember going to Le Round (sp?) many years ago...it was fun. Pam

well, i haven't taken kailey to any HUGE amusement parks, but i have at least

one idea...get a map of the place BEFORE you go. that way you can totally plan

out your day before you even get there and he can be in on what's going to

happen so he knows what to expect.

a few weeks ago we went to the bronx zoo which is like one of the biggest and

best zoos in the country. a few days before we went, me and kailey had this huge

discussion about what kind of animals we could possibly see, well... when we got

there, the first thing we did was go to the little children's zoo area. it had

different types of animals and then it had a little petting zoo with sheeps and

chickens and such. well kailey had a FIT. she did not want to be seeing farm

animals at the zoo. we moved on, but this continued to bother her for at least

an hour. we also didn't see even half the animals we had talked about maybe

seeing and i think both of us ended up disappointed because of it. can you guess

why? we didn't have a map before hand. so, that's my big suggestion.

as far as what your mom said about the petting zoo from 3 years ago, well i only

have one thing to say...that was 3 years ago!!!

oh, just had another idea. get a handicapped pass so you don't have to wait on

the lines.

Someone had posted an excellent site on taking your autistic child to

Disneyworld. You might be able to dig tha tup or just do some searches --

autism and disneyworld, autism and amusement parks, etc.

I also know that here in the states, with a doctor's note many places will

allow a child with autism to go directly to the front of the line. I'd call

& ask.

I don't know if it would be possible for you to scope out the park in

advance to see what things might set him off and maybe find an

out-of-the-way place where he could go and settle down if he got

overwhelmed. Or if you could take some kind of a tent with you that he

could crawl into if he needed some space. I am thinking about those " pop

up " play tent things with the wires in them -- they fold down flat and then

you throw them into the air and they spring open.

You could try some Bach's Rescue Remedy on him. You can give 4 drops up to

every 10 minutes until you see results. As a preventative you can give 4

drops every 4 hours. I would try this the day before and the day of, and

maybe the day after as well. (The 4 drops every 10 minutes can be given in

addition to the q4h dose.)

Hmmm...that's all I can think of!

p.s. -- it WAS three years ago...

Greggory loves amusement parks and rides are his favorite! We just

went to the county faire this weekend and he had a total blast! He

went on any ride he was tall enough for. (All with Jeff as I would

have gotten sick!) He is a daredevil when it comes to those things.

Alec had a good time too, but he doesnt do rides. The lights were a

bit much for Alec when it got dark and the music at times had him

covering his ears. We have gone to Great America a couple of times

and had no problems at all. I always make sure to have food and

drinks availible for the boys. That seems to help.

Jacqui became Bizarro Jacqui at Disneyland.

It was THE perfect trip. (OK, except for the disastrious Pirate ride)

Maybe he'll surprise you....the trick may be to keep him moving...That's

what we did.

big amusement parks?

wants VERY BADLY to go to Canada's biggest amusement park, Wonderland.

It's on a par with a Six Flags park, but a bit smaller. There's an entire

children's ride area, very big.

We have been planning to take him and his friend Amber for his birthday, but

this morning my mom called me and brought up 's meltdown at a

farm/petting zoo three years ago, and suggested he might do the same at

wonderland. If he did, We'd be out over $100 for admission fees, which we

can't afford anyway.

Any tips on amusement parks?????

Most large parks offer handicapped visitors passes. It cuts down the

waiting in lines times. We recently took both my autistic children

to Universal Studios Orlando and we had a blast. Good luck to any

vactioners... Amy B.

Phone ahead and see if they have discounts or special days for disabled kids.

Also ask if there is a time when the crowds are smaller, like in the morining on

a week day. When we took to Klondike days, we started telling him weeks

in advance where we were going and what we would be doing, and that helped a

lot. And the whole day was free for the family (including lunch!), because he's

on their special guest list as a disabled child.

Good luck!
