Guest guest
I wish I could help. My daughter is 8 and terribly obese. Her and I wear the same size. I do what I can to cook healthy, nutritious low calorie foods, but she seems to be insatiable. If I try to cut her consumption down, she cries and then sneaks the food. I try to have her exercise with me, but after a couple of minutes she peters out. I took her for a walk that I thought was relatively short. On the way back she asked if I would let her sit down, walk to get the car and go and get her. You know what my answer was. Anyway, it breaks my heart that she is so big at such a young age. Her breathing is labored and I'm so afraid of her future. Any suggestions are welcome. Kristy B wrote: I am struggling with my daughters weight. She is only 8. I have been trying to find her some sort of regular exercise program and have had no luck. The only childrens gym I have been able to find is up north caled Fitwize4kids. There is an Orange County location coming soon, but that doesnt help me now. Anyone have any suggestions? I was going to try and have us join somewhere like Curves together, but when I called they said you have to be 12. I want her to have an exercise program, not just dance, or swim lessons, or something like that. (although she will be starting swim lessons again soon). With the way childhood obesity is growing you would think someone would have already opened this market. Any suggestions? Thanks! Kristy We are a very active support group. Guest guest
Annette, Ive been looking into this alot today and have found a gym that caters to children ages 6 - 16. I dont know where you are located but you may want to give it a shot. The one nearest to me (which will still be at least 30 minutes away) doesnt open until May. But you can check out the website. The website is www.fitwize4kids.com. Also some of the Bally Total Healths have a childrens exercise class once a week. It is something they were trying out and some of them are keeping the classes going. One thing I have also done, which Im crossing my fingers to see if it works.... is my daughter is eating Healthy Choice TV dinners for dinner. That way her portions are more controlled. And she can only buy school lunch a couple times a week. I am going to start working on the Weight Watchers point system at home to see if she gets excited about it. In the last week she lost 1/2 pound. Its not much, but its a start. Although I hate to say she is on a diet, we are keeping track, and she will be rewarded for every pound she looses to get her excited about it. With the growing problem of childhood obesity, you would think there are more readily available resources. It is so hard, I dont want her to have to go thru what I went thru growing up. It breaks my heart trying to find her school uniforms that fit well and having to try and " stretch out " her shirts every morning. I absolutly hate it. Hopefully we will get thru this as well. If anyone else has any suggestions.... please let me know. Thanks, Kristy > I am struggling with my daughters weight. She is only 8. Guest guest
Thanks for the reply Kristy. I live in a very rural community in the U.P. of Michigan. There is nothing around that doesn't require a three to four hour drive. I understand the clothes issue. I buy Haley pants in my size, but petite so they aren't too long. Thankfully she is tall for her age. I also do the stretch thing on her t-shirts and don't dry certain outfits. It is so hard to monitor her constantly. I have learned that the school does not practice portion control so I will be making her lunches from now on. When I went to school we did not serve ourselves or go back for seconds. That wasn't even an option. Our school is pushing for uniforms and I am battling them based on the fact that if they can't find uniforms to fit obese students then it is a form of discrimination. The school she attends is Charter and free to all, even though it is not part of our public school system. She so wants to wear the latest fashions and doesn't understand why we can't go to the store and just buy her clothes. I have a lot of her clothes made by a seamstress. She has gotten the fat gene from both my and hubbie's family. Both our mothers and fathers are obese. My hubbie works hard building year round and keeps his weight in check by doing such excrutiating work, otherwise he'd be overweight also. Guest guest
You might try a martial arts class, or maybe yoga that is designed for Mom and daughter? My son is overweight and he's been in karate classes for just over a year. He's already a yellow belt, and his weight is starting to coincide with his height! His self esteem has sky rocketed. It's been wonderful to watch his progress. Lorie Re: Re: Childs obesity/exercise Thanks for the reply Kristy. I live in a very rural community in the U.P. of Michigan. Guest guest
Thanks Lori. Maybe we can try some kind of swimming or dance class for both of us. Guest guest
Have you thought about Tae Kwan Do? My son has class 3 days a week for 45 min. It is a great workout and it helps with self-discipline and self-defense. On the other days you could take her to he park and run her or go for a long fast walk. This way you get in some exercise too. I know it is hard. My son is 7 and is 70 lbs. He doesn't look fat but I think he is chunky and could stand to lose 10 lbs. With my husband out of town we are eating really badly these days!! Hot dogs, taquitos, soup (which isn't too bad) & just crap!! When he is out of town I just don't cook. It is nice to have a break but my kids suffer by eating junk. Good Luck!! Hugs!!! > > I am struggling with my daughters weight. She is only 8. Guest guest
Another thing we did with my son is take away the video games and DVDs out of his room. He's 13, so the antisocial behavior of a teen has kicked in. But by limiting the sedentary activities, he's become just a little bit more active. I think his way of thinking has changed. He looks for things to do, rather than reaching for the game controller or remote control. We let him have those things in a limited basis, but after 6 months of not having full access to them, those things are no longer his top priority. We've provided him with supplies for the hobbies he likes. He also has a few more chores. We thought if he had so much time for video games and movies that he had time for more responsibilities. None of these changes happened overnight. My son's guidance counselor said it takes about 21 days to develop a new habit. Stick with your decisions. If it's time for a walk, it's time for a walk. I know I wish somebody would push me like that! In time, she might start associating the exercise time with " Mom time " . My kids and I have had some great discussions while walking (or while I walked and they roller blade). Lorie Re: Childs obesity/exercise Have you thought about Tae Kwan Do? Guest guest
I did think about Karate or Tae Kwan Do, but she didnt seem interested. I disnt want her to be the " biggest kid in the class " and be uncomfortable. I kind of wanted to get her a little bit more in shape before we started a class like that, but I guess I just have to do it. I also know that I need to force us to walk in the evening. I know thats what I need as well. Thanks for your input. I will definately look into the martial arts classes locally! > > > > I am struggling with my daughters weight. She is only 8. Guest guest
I know that in my son's karate class, the kids are in all shapes and sizes. They start to look at each other differently in a short time. They no longer talk about the " big kid " or " the one with glasses " etc. Now it's " the one who can spar with Sensei " and " the one who can... " etc. Am I making sense? They start to recognize each other's skills and not their weaknesses. Lorie Re: Childs obesity/exercise I did think about Karate or Tae Kwan Do, but she didnt seem interested. Guest guest
Lorie, Thanks. That does make me feel better. I am going to try and make it exciting for Kaitlyn and see if she would be willing to give it a shot. ~Kristy > > I know that in my son's karate class, the kids are in all shapes and sizes.
