There is some kind of fruit available in the Middle East and India that

poorer people use to treat high blood sugar. I don't know the name and I'm

waiting to hear from an ex-coworker on the name but apparently it's so

reliable that they use this as their only treatment and it works amazingly.

Once I get the name, I'll post it. I don't know if will be available in the

US though.

Fruit? What about bitter mellon? It's about the size of a lemon, but

green. Looks like a veggy to me. I've never tried it but I've been

told about it by some Bengalese (Bangladeshi) people. Around here, the

asian stores carry it.

What part of NC? If you live in an area with a large Hispanic population--and

many parts of NC do have--you can get them in a 'tienda latina'. I remember

that in Charlotte, for example, they were available at the 'Carneceria Mexicana'

on Central Avenue (and probably the S. Blvd. one, too.)

Re: natural " helps " ?

Since I now live in NC, where

they are not available (collards anyone? Blech) I had forgotten all about

them until your post.

I live in ville, the " down east " coastal city next to the Camp Lejeune

Marine Corps Base. (The area took a direct hit from hurricanes Bertha and

Fran back in 1996. The eyes of both storms passed right over our house.)

There is not a large hispanic population here. I did read recently that the

hispanic population of NC is growing rapidly, but it must be further inland.

As far as I am aware, there are no hispanc markets in the area, so no Nopales

for me. The only large population we have here is Marines. <gggg>
