That is something each of us has to decide for him (or her) self in

consultation with a healthcare provider.

When do you go on insulin?

At what point in time do you switch from pills to insulin (or a

combination)

of both.

I chose to go on insulin last month to deal with some high numbers

and for better, more appropriate control. I was not maxxed out on

orals, just decided the insulin would be a better way for me to go.

It hasn't been easy getting the basal dose right - still working on

that - but the humalog (short acting) has been great in dealing with

high numbers and for when I want to eat higher carb than my usual low

carb.

Don't think of insulin as a last choice - think of it as just another

tool for control in the diabetes toolbox. Some people choose it

earlier, like me. And I'm as needle phobic as they come. I use a

pen for the humalog and a syringe for the lantus and it's already

second nature for me.

Went from oral meds to insulin 3/99. Oral meds were no longer helping

control BGL with diet ane exersize and a1c was over 14. Sgifted to MDI

(Humalog and NPH sliding scale) in March 1999. Brought a1c down to 7.5 but

on a ROLLER COASTER due to a non-standard work schedule (I am in IT).

November 16, 1999 I went on insluin pump therapy which gave me back a real

life (a1c is now 6.8-7.0). Suggest your endo run a C peptide panel when

blood work is done next to determine your insluin production level. If you

have to go on insulin it is NOT the end of the world. I beleive that an

insulin pump is the best delivery method for insulin. YMMV

When I test, my numbers are over 200 a good part of the time.

The only times that it is down is when i have VERY LITTLE CARBS

and do a real lot of walking.

Thanks
