Guest guest Posted March 30, 2006 Report Posted March 30, 2006 Hi Mike! Since I JUST had the surgery on 3/21, this is all pretty fresh in my mind, I'll tell you what I can. First, I felt that this was the right thing to do (for me) so I didn't really have any doubts. My surgeon showed me a film of the Lap RNY procedure so I was really sure I knew what he was going to do while I was under. He also had us come to numerous pre-op sessions where he and his nutritionists talked about food phases post op and how important exercise is.. that sort of thing. I've known what to expect every step of the way. If your surgeon doesn't have this sort of program, I would encourage you to ask questions about the procedure and post op care & post op eating until you are very comfortable that there won't be any surprises. Anyway, I was sure I knew what I was getting into. As far as fears, yes, I had them, but basically I did my best to just push them out of the way and think about other things. Another thing you could talk to your doctor about is putting you on (assuming you're not on one now) an anti stress/anti depressant medication to at least help you get past the surgery. Basically I was in denial as much as I could possibly be, knowing that I wanted this SO badly and that I was refusing to let my mind play games with me and get me all upset over a possible (but not probable) negative outcome. One thing I struggle with always is worrying about things I can't control. I had every reason to trust my doctor and he didn't let me down. As far as the experience itself, it really wasn't bad. A bit of discomfort initially, but that hardly lasted any time at all. And your body will want to sleep thru the worst of it anyway, which makes it not seem so bad. My biggest complaint was that I couldn't have anything to drink for about 36 hours until they were convinced there wasn't a leak. All good precautions, I'm glad my Dr. was so anal, it WAS in my best interest, of course, but I was feeling quite dehydrated by the time they gave me some water... Sorry this was so long, but really, it's not a bad surgery, It's serious surgery, but on a pain scale, it wasn't bad at all and the healing time seems pretty fast. At least that's been my experience so far! Elaine Hello, I am new to the group just joined today. I should have joined a long time ago, I have been jumping through the hoops at Kaiser for almost a year now. I have a surg. date next month and just wanted to find a place where people were talking about this topic. Now that I have a date on my mind, I guess the whole gravity of the whole thing is ringing home, Im getting nervous and excited at the same time. Of course I think of what I will look and fell like in a years time, but the dangers are all in the font of my mind as well. I ask you that have had the surgery your thoughts, did you feel some of the same things, and how did you cope with the fear of the operation? I noticed from the pictures that there are not very many men in this group..... Hope all are well and droping pounds, Thanks. Guest guest Posted March 30, 2006 Report Posted March 30, 2006 Hi Mike!!! My name is . I had surgery Aug of 2004 and am down 125 lbs. I was terrfified of the surgery. For the 2 weeks leading up to the surgery I was throwing up and I had the runs. My body just freaked out. This used to happen to me as a kid when something big was coming up. After the surgery I was oh that is it .. It really wasn't that big of a deal. I was a little sore and really tired for about 3 weeks and that was it. (more tired than sore). You will do great!!!! Keep us posted on your progress & WELCOME to the group!!!! Hugs!!!! > > Hello, I am new to the group just joined today. Guest guest Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 Mike!!! Congrats on your pursuit of a new life. I am 6 weeks post op and thanking god everyday that I went through with my decision. I can tell you that everything you are feeling is very normal. I researched and read everything I could get my hands on for two years before deciding to go through with it. I even backed out three times but finally, my surgeon and I had a VERY long talk and I decided to trust him fully. 55 pounds since that visit (40 since surgery)and off all my pre op pills (bp, prediabetic meds, antidepressives) later, I'm happy for nothing else except that it gave me the jump I needed and I am free from ALL meds today. That was worth the surgery in itself. I'm still a little tired some days, but I also work 12 hour nights as a Cardiac nurse, so I'm Always tired but it's been a pretty easy ride so far. You are doing a GREAT thing...Hang in there and don't hesitate to ask ANY questions. I asked a million right up til the time I was rolled into surgery!!! Guest guest Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 Thank, I will ask the questions as they come.......I often wonder how painful and long the recovery is going to be. I wonder how I will look and how people will think of me after the weight loss.......Do people look at you like you took the easy way out, and you really didnt loose the weight yourself..........I havent really told anybody that Im having it done, just my family and a close friend. Other than that I want to keep it under my hat, it that possible? Has anybody else done this? Thanks Mike Re: The new guy...... Mike!!! Congrats on your pursuit of a new life. Guest guest Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 I felt the same things you are and it is totally normal. For me, I handed it over to God, knowing that he would do what was best for me and that gave me a good bit of peace. I have had several complications, but would do it all over again in a heartbeat! Never underestimate the impossible, Quote
Guest guest Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 I'm trying to keep my surgery on the DL for now. Getting info, scheduling appointments, etc. have been in the works for months now and I've only told my family, boyfriend, and two close friends. My surgery is in June and right now I'm trying to decide when I want to tell the rst of my friends - I'm not telling anyone at work, because you know how THAT is. I'm sort of settled on telling everyone else in May, after my insurance has approved me and I'm more comfortable with fighting off negative comments. Right now I don't really need that influence on my confidence and drive to get all the tests done! Good luck! > > > > Hello, I am new to the group just joined today. Guest guest Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 Mike, I am pre-op and have not even talked with the surgeon. I am going to start my appointments next month YIPPITY SKIPPITY:). I have done so much research and have talked with so many that have gone throught the surgery that I feel comfortable with the whole lifestyle change and that stuff. The things that scare me the most are that I am going to be cold the rest of my life and that I have to have an IV. I have never had surgery and the IV scares me. I know so many other things that scare me and the thing that scares me the most is a needle. Good luck and I am sure we will be hearing a lot more from both of us. Guest guest Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 I have kept it a secret from many of my friends. When people ask how I have lost weight I tell them I'm eating a lot less. Which is true. The only people I have told are extremely close friends and family. I've also told 3 people at my church who are more than 100lbs overweight. When they asked me how I've done it I told them and asked them to keep it to themselves. I have one of them trying to get insurance approval now. Good luck!! Guest guest Posted April 1, 2006 Report Posted April 1, 2006 Been there. I have a friend who lost a bunch of weight a couple of years ago. before we were both the same size. At first she was so sweet saying she was going to give me ehr clothes. Then, when she went through her wardrobe she kept talking about how huge the clothes were and how she couldn't believe she was ever that big. Made me sick and broke my heart. Kasie commnavhomepac wrote: I have been pretty lucky that the response I have gotten has been more positive then negative . The most negative reaction I have gotten was from a friend of mine that can't seem to give me anything on my weight loss but negativity. Of course this is a woman that when I weighed more than her said things like " Wow these pants are so big on me I am swimming in them. I should just give them to you " Nice huh? Guest guest Posted April 1, 2006 Report Posted April 1, 2006 Well I have known her for over 12 years now and our kids and her kids all were kind of like family so I put up with it. But even my kids are saying MOM why do you put up with her? What is sad is she is a big girl and she has allowed both of her kids, who were both quite slim to get fat. Her poor little girl is only 9 and already has fat rolls that hang from her under arms. She cries and says she is fat and her Mom just says No you aren't you are just growing. Her son is 14 and weighs over 225 pounds. Her husband was gone for 17 months working overseas and she refused to cook dinners so it was fast food or the kids were frying food or eating frozen burritos and pizza. One night I watched her son fry tater tots and cover them with cheese and that was his dinner. I told her that I was scared for her son because he didn't look good last time he was here and diabetes runs in her family. I asked her to please take him to the Dr and have him checked.....she still hasn't. Bobbi -- Re: Re: The new guy...... Bobbi- Tell us all again why you call this person a " friend " ??
