Guest guest
I think that this was an early form of the Atkins diet. just some thoughts and maybe some helpful info Anyone remember the diet that had you buy the tablets that diabetics used to check for ketones? I think it was one of those that kept carbs to rock bottom...the theory was that when you started burning fats it would show up as ketones..and if it didn't you were eating too many carbs..it may have been the liquid peotein one though... I was reminded of it a few days ago when I read about some low carb diet causing ketone levels to rise.... this diet expert was saying that while high levels of ketones in your blood was harmful, it was okay to have higher than normal if your kidneys and liver were working okay.. Guest guest
Goldie, from having taught biochemistry, I respectfully have to disagree with you. Excess protein, carbs and fats are converted to fats and stored as fat. It is the most efficient way to store extra calories, as you noted, 9 cal/g vs 4 cal/g. This is my first post to the group. I was diagnosed at the end of April, with a bs of >600. I am on avandia and insulin, up to about 30 units a day in divided doses. Even with my background, the diet/insulin balancing is mind-boggling. I haven't done anything creative in months. I have spent most of the last 3 months just focusing on the diabetes. It is getting to be under control, with most bs readings under 200. But it has been a struggle. Fortunately, Medicare picks up most of the cost for the supplies I need. I do have to pay for the lancets and alcohol wipes. Minor inconvenience compared to the rest of the costs! Like many others newly diagnosed, I have learned a lot from this group. Thank you all for being there.
