Guest guest Posted June 11, 2008 Report Posted June 11, 2008 I'm reading a book called " The Zen of Eating " that you might find useful. One of it's big points - which I have found incredibly useful when the kind of negative voices you are talking about start shouting at me - is the concept of Inevitable Suffering versus Optional Suffering. Inevitable suffering is the kinds of things that just happen in life, nothing you can do about them - death, job loss, etc. Optional suffering is suffering we take on ourselves for no real good reason. " I'm fat and ugly and no one will ever love me " is optional suffering - we take it on because we DECIDE to, for whatever individual reason we might decide to. The trick is recognizing it as OPTIONAL and deciding not to exercise the otpion. I'm a world-class worrier - I should have an Olympic medal in Pointless Worry by now! I've found this concept of optional suffering very helpful when I find myself starting to obsess about something in the future, or in the past or even right now. STOP - this is suffering I'm imposing ON MYSELF, for no real good reason. It's optional, and thank you but, no, I don't think I'll take that on right now, have a nice day, go away. It's very freeing to be able to recognize this about our own bothersome thought processes. Quote
Guest guest Posted June 11, 2008 Report Posted June 11, 2008 Hi Tripp. Perhaps you'd like to try poking around on http://www.bodypositive.com/ Hopefully there might be some suggestions of interest and assistance to you there. Don't put up with those lies - counteract them strongly and immediately with positive and self-loving affirmations. The more you remind yourself of the good stuff, the more it will come to hold front and centre in your mind. That's just the way our brains work! Hugs S > > I am needing some encouragement. I am hearing lies in my head such as " You are ugly " , " You > are fat. " , " You are unlovable " , " You will never be married nor dateable until you are smaller. " > > Can you help me counter-act these lies with truth? > Also, I am willing for any good books to deal with this problem. > Quote
Guest guest Posted June 11, 2008 Report Posted June 11, 2008 The first question I would 'ask' that voice is WHO SAYS?!? Its like the old children sing song - Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me! If YOU believe those things are true, then they will be for YOU. But I doubt you are such a pile of unlovable!! Sooooo, arm yourself with all the POSITIVE things you know to be true about yourself and counter attack that voice with 'I don't think so-es' until YOU win :) And remember in the immortal words of Rodney Dangerfield when he was told he was 'fat' - he told that person, " Well you are ugly, and I can loose weight. " Life is about change, make yours as positive as you can and I bet the weight takes care of itself. Trust your wonderful body and let the EXternal voices chatter away - they AIN'T you. ehugs, Katcha > > I am needing some encouragement.
