The connection is stress. The pain causes enough stress to trigger the

mouth sores. I assume you are talking about cold/canker sores--not a

reaction to medication. Unfortunately, our disease is one big circle.

Orin,

Some of the stuff you said in this post sounds like Dr. Pagano's theories.

He has a book called the Natural Healing of Psoriasis. (I think that's the

name of it!) Anyway, it talks a lot about the intestines, liver functions

etc, and what is defunct in people with Psoriasis/PA.

I have never been able to stick to his exact program, so I really can't

testify to the validity of his theories.

Well maybe I should break down and buy the Pagano book. I've heard many

others say pretty much as you did that the diet is unreasonably difficult to

adhere to but maybe reading his slant on things would help me understand

whats going on better. Theres a lot of clues and theres always someone

noticing another pattern of symptoms so maybe one of these days someone will

nail the specific malfunction. Orin

I have also had outbreaks with the mouth sores. Not too often but enough to

be annoying. My rheumie says that I have a mild case of Reiter's Syndrome as

well as the PA. I have done some research on the Reiter's Syndrome and the

mouth sores are a common sympton. Went to my dentist with the mouth sores

initially and he had never seen anything like it. But he gave me a RX for

Fluocinonide to rinse my mouth with & it's wonderful stuff!! Cleared my

sores up within a day or two. Hope this helps a little!!

Hi Orin,

It is an interesting read. He describes the reason he believes this happens

very well... with pictures of the intestines, liver, etc. and descriptions of

their functions. It is an interesting look on things.

Hi an occasional green banana for the stomach, heartburn, ulcers and

probiotics for the intestine. I have to make one distinction that just

occured to me on the subject of mouth sores. Psoriatic mouth sores are

uncommon but mouth sores caused by immune supressing drugs such as

cyclosporine and MTX are a different thing so maybe we should all make that

distinction psoriatic sores or fungal/bacterial sores from immune

supression. Orin

" This is somewhat interesting in that methotrexate depletes the body

of folic acid and my Dr told me I must take it. J "

I think folic acid may help people with canker sores whether or not

they're taking MTX. I've never taken MTX but had been experiencing

painful canker mouth sores for the last couple of years, getting much

worse and more frequent in the last year. I wondered if it had

anything to do with the fact that my PA had been getting worse -- or

with the fact that my ibuprofen dosage had increased.

I read somewhere that folic acid heps canker sores, so I started

taking it about 2.5 months ago. Since that time I've only had one

outbreak --a great improvement!. I believe that the recent outbreak

was related to a mild case of mouth thush from the minocycline that

I've recently started. I treated the thrush and the sores went away.

(The folic acid pills that I take also include vitamin B12).

Sharron,

There is lots out there to control the itching like Aveno bath and soap. It

is good. Also, my favorite is Sarna lotion. It 's active ingredient is

Menthol and Camphor. It cools as it soothes the itching. I was introduced

to it by my OB-GYN. I had PUPPS (horrible pregnancy rash) with my first son.

I lived in oatmeal (Aveno) baths and when I got out my husband would slather

the Sarna al over me and I would lay on cold 1000 thread count sheets. It

worked fantastic for the itching. Plus I liked the fact that it didn't have

any steroids in it. There are lots of topicals with steroids that work great

as well, like triamcinolone. These are good topicals, but since I have to

take steroids orally and by injection sometimes, I like to try things without

them as well. Sarna is found OTC at most drug stores and if it is not on the

shelves ask the pharmacist and they my keep it behind the counter or can

order it for you. Good luck and let me know if you try it and how you like

it!

I got a crack at the corner of my mouth (I think it might be a

different type of sore) and started B Complex vitamins for stress.

The sore is gone and my doctor told me to stay on the B vitamins. She

also said the sores from mtx are more like cankor sores and they can

be treated in that way. A pharmacist might be helpful.

Hi! I'm Gail. I have just started on MTX injectable two weeks ago.

Two days after the injection, I got " sores " like blisters on the back

of my tongue. When I questioned my rheumatologist he said it was

side effect of the mtx, skip the mtx for one week and be sure to take

folic acid 1 gm per day orally. I had coincidentally asked for

advice on this PA site re MTX and folic acid. Mickie, who responded

to me said . . . well I will just copy and paste those two emails

here. I hope it can be helpful to you.

After reading the email from Mickie and the editor's note, I did

call my rheumotologist and asked whether I would be a candidate for

the Leucovorin. He agreed. So tomorrow I will take the MTX 20 mg

sub q. then 24 hours later I take one 5 mg dose of Leucovorin. On

each of the days I also take folic acid 1 gram orally. I'm

optimistic. I'll let you know how it goes. I hope this information

is helpful.

Welcome

I take 1mg daily except the MTX shot day. 12 hours after the

injection (the next

morning) I take a 10 mg Lukevorin. So really that is 5 1mg Folic Acid

and 1

10mg Lukevorin.

Hi! I never posted before today and now I am posting twice in one

day. I take MTX 15 mg orally once per week. (have been on it for 6+

years) I also take folic acid once daily 400 mcgs. Is that enough

to compensate for whatever bad the mtx does?

Thanks again!

HI, Missy. Sorry never heard of this, but uses Listerine every day

and that really helps him. He also takes his folic acid which helps keep

the mouth sores away. He hasn't had any since shortly after starting the

MTX and using the Listerine every day. Good luck, Michele

Mouth Sores

Hi gang,

Well we survived the second week on Methotrexate. Tyler still felt dizzy

after taking it and had diarrhea. But now he has some sores in his

mouth. I called the Dr. and the nurse said she would call in Pink Magic,

which is a mouth wash I am familiar with, but when I went to the

Pharmacy to pick it up the pharmacist said what was called in was a

combination called Magic Wash that she was not familiar with and it was

coming up on the computer as an interaction with Methotrexate so she

wouldn't give it to me until she could talk to the Dr. tomorrow. Anyone

else heard of this wash? Tyler's appetite has sure changed on the

Methotrexate, he used to eat 24/7. But he is not eating as much lately.

Which could be because of the mouth sores. He is also really tired after

school.

Thanks for listening. I hope everyone has a good week.

It's usually the case that chemo patients get mouth sores. Amazingly I never

got them. I kept some sort of salt water solution in the bathroom just in case

they came. The instructions were to rinse my mouth out as much as possible with

the salt water.

Is it normal for cancer patients to get mouth sores? If yes, what do

you do to help them? Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Robin....a good friend of mine has oral cancer and he recently

asked the doctor to prescribe " miracle mouthwash " which I found

posted on a board for head/neck cancer patients. He has found the

mouthwash very soothing, has made a huge difference in how his mouth

feels...you might find it helpful too.

MIRACLE MOUTHWASH

This is by prescription but this is the recipe:

Benylin 1120cc

Cortef 15cc

Nystatin Syrup 15cc

Tetracycline liquid 30cc

You shake it well. The dose is 10-15cc You swish and hold then

swallow.

Dear a,

Yes, mouth sores and thrush are not uncommon with liver disease, actually I believe them to be more a result of meds.

I have lots of problems with mouth sores because I also have sjogrens which causes dry mouth, eyes, etc. I use Biotene toothpaste and mouthwash. They were recommended by both my dr. and my dentist. They are more spendy but last well and are very gentle on the sores as well as help get rid of them and keep them at bay. I can always tell if I've slacked off on my usage because the sores come back quickly.

Harper has had dealings with thrush and can probably tell you what meds work best and are least harmful. It sounds like that's what you may have and I hear that it's miserable.

Good luck getting your mouth cleared up - certainly not something you need on top of everything!

Boy, you all don’t know HOW lucky you are to have doctors who

actually KNOW what this disease is all about. I think I would just roll

over and die if my GI actually believed that my stiffness, soreness, and pain

in the upper quadrant was actually from the AIH. She just tells me that

since the labs are “good” that it can’t be from the liver…..oh

well!

Hi Gayl.

I'm not to familiar with Bechets disease but can certainly relate to the

mouth sores. My 7 year old with Pfapa had been having an awful time with them

though not as severe as your child is experiencing. She recently went non stop

for 6 + months and boy do I feel for these poor kids. How horrible. She didn't

start off this syndrome with cankers they came along after a few years. They

seemed to have exploded just as her high fevers started to diminish. She now

very rarely gets a fever with her cycles and is currently taking no medication..

Anyway, we started her on a toothpaste called Biotene that I found at CVS.

Her last mouthsore disappeared shortly after wards and she's been canker free

for over a month now. One of the culprits in some people with mouth problems is

Sodium l Sulfate which is a foaming ingredient in most toothpastes (

and shampoos etc..). This particular one is free of it and its working for us.

Might be worth trying? There's a few other brands out there to without it SLS.

Don't know the names offhand thoough.

Best Wishes to all of you!
