Hi All!

Me too -- I have a lot of success with Desitin -- I also get itchy sometimes,

but I think that is seb/derm. I have been under some stress lately, so I am

in a small flare. Then I blew it. I went to lunch today and ate a NO NO.

Seasoned French Fries. Within 5 minutes, my face was hot. Oh welll, they

tasted good.

Hi Nicki et al...It sounds like your bumps are different...I know exactly what

Glenys is talking about-the bumps and itchy skin have always been a bigger

problem for me than flushing, and then as the years rolled by and the various

antibiotic creams, oral meds etc. weren't really helping much, or at all,

anymore, the bumps began to slowly travel down the sides of my face from my

forehead where they started out as my first symptom.

They are very small, usually not noticeably colored or just slightly pink,

can get redder when general flushing occurs on face, and there are usually

lots of them in a general area-they aren't " filled " with anything like a

pimple or cysts, just more like a rash that doesn't go away --HELP me here DR.

LINDA--, I know I knew the name for this at one time but have forgotten! You

can sometimes look at your skin from one angle and not really see them-then

the light will hit your face from another direction and it looks like a mine

field of tiny pebbles run amok across your face (but you can always feel

them-it makes your skin feel " rough " . My skin tends to be very dry on my

cheeks and forehead, and oily on my nose and chin, so I have an itch problem

anyway, for that reason alone. But when I had the bumps for so many years, &

when they were really noticeable, my skin seemed to get even itchier w/ a

" flaring " of the bumps!

The cea disks took the bumps away very quickly, and they only tend to

come back if I eat big NO NO'S or get REALLY stressed-either emotionally (me?

never...yeah right!) or environmentally (too cold (being in the snow tends to

be bad on my skin)-too dry-too hot-too windy-) but I step up my disk routine

and it subsides quickly. The disks have all but shrunk up the small red veins

(there's a name for this too but I don't remember) that as the years also

rolled by w/ less than effective rosacea treatment, seemed to enlarge and get

longer off the sides of my nose onto my cheeks. One side of my nose they are

all gone, the other side has the remnants of one small vein. I wish they

could find a " cure " , but until then I am most happy with the effectiveness of

the disks over anything else I've tried, and I know I am not putting umpteen

antibiotics into myself anymore. Of course someday these too may become less

than effective as my body becomes immune to their effects, but I HOPE not! I

just have to be sure to be as diligent about moisturizing as I can be because

the disks tend to be drying by their nature, and if I am it doesn't seem to be

a big problem. But drying isn't as upsetting to me as the bumps and red veins

on my face were for so many years. I guess its all a trade off of one sort or

another sometimes. best to all...debbie g.

I am new to the group but so pleased to have found people with similar skin to

mine. I am not sure however if I am alone in having extremely itchy bumpy

skin along with the flushing. I have found acqueous cream

(recommended for excema) soothing as a cleanser and moisturizer. I daren't

use water on my skin as its so drying I just wipe the cream off with a cotton

pad. I would love to hear from any one with itchy rosacea who has had sucess

with other similar cleansers/moisturisers.

I'm not sure what you mean by bumpy...but if you look at my

face in the right light....it looks lumpy...especially along my

jaw line. I had the derm cut out a couple of the bumps last month.

I am not sure what she called them....but if i pinch them..stuff comes

out..but they fill back up...cyst-ie looking things... YUK!! She said

if this group heals ok. for me....she will snip out some more. I have

dry itchy skin in the morning and by the late afternoon..it is oily and

hot feeling.

I use neutrogena moisturizer and cetiphil for cleansening

Hi Debbie!

I have the exact same symtoms that you have, I thought that the bumps were

permanent but according to your note, you can get rid of them? What are

these disks you talk about and where do you get them?

Any info will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Rob

Hi all,

So you think desitin can remove the bumps? Is this an over the counter

medication? I am finding so many choices to try and combat this rosacea

problem. I just started the cea LTD disk treatment, and discontinued the

metrogel cream. Metrogel in 2 months did absolutely nothing for me. Look, I

don't want to appear in the next oil of olay commercial, I just want to look

halfway decent. These tiny bumps are really depressing me. I fought acne 12

years ago and thought I had won the " war of my face. " Now, acne's stupid

older sister " rosacea " turns up! Also wondering, has Anyone heard of

virualcide or sulfacet-R treatments. I'll take the desitin treatment into

consideration. I wonder if derms are hiding the fact of a real answer. The

ones I have gone to don't seem to care about the emotional relation to this.

Thanks all and somebody help my bumps!

Hi all,

I get the little bumps too, and I haven't tried the cea Ltd Disks, but I

suspect that the main ingredient in them that gets rid of the bumps is the

zinc. My theory is based on the fact that Desitin (zinc oxide cream) got

rid of the bumps (and redness) for me. If you can tolerate it, some kind of

zinc oxide cream might be an affordable and easy to find alternative to the

disks. I find it a little drying, but if I use desitin once a day and

moisturize twice a day, I'm bump (and redness and flake) -free!

Hi. I keep reading about Desitin helping some of you guys out, so I just ran

out to the store to get it.(most of my free time is running around searching

for any product that might help! This really sucks!) Anyway one of you wrote

that it helped alot and one wrote that it caused a flare. So I guess everyone

reacts differently but this gets confusing! For those of you that it helped

was your skin really dry and red? I go through stages where I resemble a

lizard so Im a bit concerned with it drying more and then I,ll need a ski-mask

to go to work! What moisturizers do you recommend? Ive tried

Cetaphil,Neutrogena, Eucerin (which works the best but it is really heavy and

probably clogs the pores).Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also Im

currently taking Accutane ,which dries out the skin more, so I need a

moisturizer that is rather heavy duty.Bill

Hi everyone!,

I've been hearing a lot about desitin. Is this the regular old desitin that you buy at the store? Any special brand? How ofter do you apply it? At night?

Thanks.

Debbie,

The condition you are describing is called " peri-oral dermatitis " which is often found in those with rosacea. It appears more like a rash rather than pimples. It is my opinion that acne, seborrheic dermatitis, peri-oral dermatitis and rosacea all belong in the same family of sebaceous (oil) gland disease.

Bill,

You are right. Something that helps one person can be a trigger for the next.

Just test everything on a small part of your face first. It won't always

work, but sometimes you can spot a trigger before you have used it all over

your face. Just go slow. Only change one thing at a time.

Eurecin is a good moisturizer. It doesn't clog pores and if it works for your

skin use it. Heck, I use vaseline over here cause it's almost the only think

I don't react too. And I love it for that reason.

I gotta back you up on this. It takes time to get better. Absolutely you

have to work at calming the skin down by using the products - be it a zinc

oxide product or a good cream you love - that works for you and avoiding

triggers. If you don't have ocular rosacea, an antihistamine can be a good

thing. The further you can get from a full flare, the less you react to a

trigger and the milder it is. Alright, alright, I do have to keep treating

the seb/derm when it pops up but even that pops up less and less the further I

get from a strong flare. I wonder why.

Lance, I used sulfacet-r for a while and it was good. I had to

discontinue use because it made my skin too dry. I notice that any

agent that takes away excess oil, clears up my rosacea temporarily.

However, my skin looks dry and wrinkly. I don't like that tradeoff!

Desitin is an ointment for diaper rash that contains zinc oxide. It's

the zinc oxide that calms the redness. Desitin has petrolatum (like

Vaseline) in it which makes me flare and break out. If Vaseline makes

your skin react, Desitin may not be good. About the behavior of

derms, I think it could be a lot of things. The one thing that comes

to mind is that there's not a lot of definitive answers about rosacea

out there, and they lack the time to hash things over with patients

who don't have something life-threatening like skin cancer. I hate

the attitude that I'm bothering them with my questions, though. I

wish more derms took our concerns seriously. I really feel like I'm

no more than a number sometimes (who looks like Rudolf the red-nosed

reindeer!). I've had both good insurance and bad insurance -- the

attitude is the same! I'm still on the lookout for a good derm...

Anyway, let us know what you try and how it works. Take care! Matija

Debbie and Dr. Sy, I have to be careful about my oral hygiene or I get

those bumps too. I use unflavored, unwaxed floss. (Mint flavored

floss is the worst!) Also, I make sure to brush my teeth after I wash

my face and apply meds, foundation. As I'm brushing my teeth, I try

to keep all the toothpaste gunk inside my mouth. (It takes a lot of

practice to do this!) I rinse with water thoroughly until I get the

flavor of the toothpaste out of my mouth. Then, I rinse with

Listerine. Then I wash my hands thoroughly. I don't use mints,

dentyne, etc. at all. A derm told me that mint/cinnamon flavoring is

the culprit behind this. I don't know why rosacea people seem to have

this happen a lot. Maybe Dr. Sy could tell us? Take care, Debbie!

Matija,I think you need some help. Send me a short history and I'll see what I can recommend.

Sorry that you've had bad experience with derms - they are under tremendous pressure recently and most don't like the situation (loss of control). I apologize for them. You have to be in their shoes to understand their frustrations. Luckily, I have been practicing without being part of any insurance system and I am as busy as I want to be (only practice 2 days a week, sigh), so much so that I have to close my practice to new patients several months ago. This shows that the consumers want more.

I don't know the answer either. I think you have peri-oral dermatitis and some studies show that fluorides can trigger a flare. Also the flavoring.

Matija-

I also have problems with toothpaste - I am allergic to flouride (I have

broken out in hives after receiving flouride treatments at the dentist)

and I believe that the phosphates in some toothpastes cause a problem

too. I am using a toothpaste that contains no preservatives, dyes, or

artifical flavors. It is called Tom's of Maine. I am using the fennel

flavor with propolis and myrrh - the box is purple and white. This is

the only flavor that does not contain flouride and it does not have any

mint. I live in North Carolina and the only store I have seen it in is

in the local CVS drug store. Here are the ingredients: calcium carbonate

(chalk), glycerin, water, sodium lauryl sulfate (from coconut oil),

carrageenan (seaweed), fennel oil, myrrh, and propolis. Try it and let

me know if it helps.

Bill,

I am so sorry you reacted to it. How's it going now? When I have that kind

of reaction going on, I put my feet up, use a cool - not cold - compress, take

a couple of aspirin and an antihistamine. And relax. Reactions like that are

intense but they go away, so hang in there.

Hey. You just found one of your triggers and I've got a nickel that says it

isn't the zinc - more likely the fragrance or even the petroleum in it. Just

for the record, I can't use Desitin either - does the same thing to me. I can

use plain old zinc oxide with vaseline but then I don't react to petroleum.

You might. So, go slow. There are several zinc creams out there that don't

have petroleum. Maybe later, when things calm down it worth testing them.

Esther
