Not on THIS list. You can think as you please and it is certainly fine with me. Nothing works for everyone and nothing works all the time, but most things work for somebody at some point in time. We don't have an ABA program going (yet?) but -- Ideally, we do not use aversives except in dangerous situations - hitting the window with a baseball bat, running repeatedly into the aquarium...I am not perfect but I do try to use distraction and gentle discipline first. Time-outs are no longer an option because of SIB...not that they were much more than a wrestling match anyway. They did eventually work when Mikey was trying to squash Gabe but now I would choose a different tactic, both because I have learned different tactics and because it just isn't practical anymore. We definitely do not use them with learning. Although I am sure there are kids out there who respond to them beautifully, so please don't take that wrong if you use them for your child. Our ST & OT and play group *encourage* Mikey to stay in his seat and reward him for doing so. They might hold him in the seat if he tried to get up to see if they could get him to stay, but if he was really fighting them or was truly distressed they would let him up. I believe that it is essential to make these sessions fun and rewarding for , or he will stop doing them altogether. The very same images can have drastically different effects on all of us! I think part of it is that Autism is different for every one of us. The future scares the crap out of me. I can hardly think of it in ANY terms, but if I have to face it right now... I want to face the future that has Mitchel being able to be more independant rather than not. ly, I dont' want to think about it at ALL!!! the thought of High School scares me.
