Guest guest
-- We are RIGHT where you are!!! Just finished the third round of antibiotics for a strep that showed up 6 weeks ago. I am so frustrated! Our kids already deal with enough. The doc figures is a carrier now and wanted to nuke the strep so it wouldn't just keep recurring all summer. Our frustration is that all this is wreaking havoc with ketones, and therefore seizure control, AND we are so desperate to get our kiddo out of the drunken medication overload she's on right now. But the illness counts as one change, the antibiotics count as a second, and of course it is unreasonable to add a third change of AEDs/diet to fine-tune for better control and fewer side effects. I'll be eager to read the replies that come for this...must set my Yahoo to no-mail though as we are headed out of town for a couple of weeks. Good luck...I hope you can break out of this cycle too! Guest guest
Hi , told me that she definitely sees kids getting sick more frequently when on higher ratios for a long period.... at a point where their body is really needing to have the ratio lowered. You might want to mention it to her and see what she thinks. I know there is a correlation. I used to get strep all the time as a kid..... in the fifth grade, I definitely spent more time home sick than in class. My uncle was a naturopathic doctor (unusual back in the mid-60's) and told my parents a number of things to try. For one thing, he said not to run me right in to the doctor for antibiotics at the first sign of a sore throat.... and not to give me aspirin (there was no Tylenol in those days) to reduce the fever but to let the fever run up and do it's job to burn out the bacteria. Now... that's not easy to do with a seizure kid.... if he tends to have seizures with fever (Katera does, although hers usually only occur when the fever is just beginning). I think it makes sense in theory, for the average kid.... a fever is a defense mechanism the body is trying to use and if we keep suppressing it, we aren't letting the immune system work. The body also needs a chance to develop it's resistance to a bug naturally. He also told my parents to eliminate milk products from my diet while I was sick..... and that milk creates mucous in the throat area which the strep germs thrive on.....and to throw away my toothbrush and buy a new one. The next time I got strep, they waited an extra two days and let my fever run (watching to make sure it didn't go over 104).... cooling me down just with cool sponge baths and then took me in for penicillin, which was given by injection, as I recall (ouch!). I didn't get strep again for almost 30 years (had it once 7 yrs ago). I know that letting the fever run may not be an option but I just thought I'd let you know my experience. None of my four kids have ever had strep but I think if they did, I would try using olive leaf extract as a supplement.... and gargling with colloidal silver (let me know if you need to know where to find this stuff). Also, using coconut oil as a fat source for a Keto Kid would be a good choice because of it's anti-viral, anti-bacterial qualities. Remember that repeated course of anti-biotics really messes up the digestive tract and that you need to replace the good bacteria in the gut with a pro-biotic (acidophilus, etc) once they are all done taking the medication. The healthy good bacteria balance in the gut supports the immune system. Hope you can get it under control. Remember.... lots of Vitamin C and fresh garlic, too! You could probably make a Keto chicken soup and add garlic to it. Gargling with very warm salt water (can he gargle?) helps with the owie throat and creates a hostile environment for the strep bugs, too. Patti keto diet and strep throat Good morning! woke up this morning with another sore throat. He has already had strep throat three times this spring, so I know that is what it is again. Does the keto diet reduce the immune system that much? He has been on the diet for two years, one month. Instead of getting dressed for school, he got dressed and came out to the kitchen and announced, " I got dressed for a doctor's appointment. " This is getting to be too routine. How do we stop the cycle??? --'s mom

Guest guest
We've been on the diet 5+ years. In our case, Jake has never been " healthier. " I think he's had strep twice in all that time, and zero ear infections. (He's 6 yrs old). When he does have strep, he ends up in the ER w/ seizures....and to treat it we give him one big shot of penicillin....then we avoid oral meds, extra carbs, etc. It's a big shot, it hurts, but it has worked for us. Someone asked about what vitamins you use.... we started w/ Polyvisol, then went to Unicap M, where we've stayed. Have tried and dropped Bugs because of aspartame. Have tried more " natural " vitamins that many others use, but they made Jake sick to his stomach. Unicap M seems to be fine. I crush the tablet. So....I would argue that no, at least for my kid, he has been his healthiest on the diet and I feel that it in no was has compromised his immune system. I can count on one hand the number of times he's actually been " sick. " Barb Swoyer, Jake's mom keto diet and strep throat > Good morning! > woke up this morning with another sore throat. Guest guest
Well, one thing (advice for everyone) is to get rid of his toothbrush now and get another new one after antibiotic treatment is done. That way there is no risk of re-infection. Jenn & Sene wrote: > Good morning! > woke up this morning with another sore throat.
