Hire cars for limited ROM

I wonder whether any of you can help me with regard to the hiring of

a car which will suit my limited range of motion.

My main problem is that I am only able to bring my knee up a short

distance towards my body - about 45% from vertical.

I am looking for a hire car with a seat that is quite high in

relation to the floor of the vehicle. Many SUVs are quite high off

the ground but when you get in the seat is low in relation to the

pedals.

Does anyone know of a suitable vehicle? I am beginning to think that

I may have to hire a van.

Thanks

Jill

Jill,

Do you have the ROM restrictions because you just had surgery or is

there some other reason? I ask because if you just had the operation it may

be that you shouldn't be driving quite yet. Hitting the brake quickly during

a panic stop can put a tremendous load on the hip that could cause problems.

Ask your doctor.

Hi Jill,

Yes there is a great vehicle that is recommended by my for people like us

who had hip replacements.

The vehicle is the E150 Luxury or " Conversion " Van sold at most car

dealers. I purchased the Ford. You don't need a new one if you can't

afford it. I purchased a new one because I'm not a mechanic and travel 25

miles one way to work.

The van have high captain seats that can be adjusted to virtually any

comfortable position.

It has running boards and pull bars at the door to assist you to easily

get in to it. Also it sits at a perfect level from running board to

ground. Many car dealers (even doctors) suggest this vehicle. Don't get

the standard van... make sure it's a " Conversion Van " .

If you want a car make sure it doesn't sit low to the ground, as most do.

It's hard to get in and out. And make sure the car is larger with large

doors that swing open... this is very important. Such as a Lincoln Town

Car, Cadillac, etc.

And make sure the seats are firm not real soft. Hipsters show never sit

in real soft chairs or sofas!

Hope I was able to help. I live in Venice, Florida. Drop me an E-mail

anytime: bobvankay@...

Good luck my friend!

Jill,

I had to buy a new vehicle pre-op as well. Not only did the Subaru have

185,000+ miles on it, but was low to the ground and a stick shift. I ended

up with a Plymouth Voyager minivan. It is low enough that I can get into

it without having to have running boards, but high enough that my leg was

able to be swung in without too much trouble (after my left hip was done, I

couldn't move the leg at all on my own and it couldn't be bent far at

all-everything was too numb and stiff). I have very little trouble getting

in and out of cars now (including my friend's '65 Mustang), but am hanging

on to the van for awhile longer. I doubt very much that I could drive a

stick shift yet-another goal for me to reach for!

Go to a used car dealer, explain your situation, and I'm sure he will be

happy to let you attempt to climb in and out of as many vehicles as you wish.
