I would even defend YOU, emtpintx, if somebody else on this list directed a personal attack at you. Guest guest
OK, I am going to sign onto this particular discussion one more time. Ladies and gentleman, I think we have made it very clear to this individual how the EMS community feels about Dr. Bledsoe. We like and respect him, regardless of what has happened in the past. This man has been honest and open with us, and is in the process of correcting past mistakes. We have ALL made past mistakes and we have ALL stuck out foot in our mouths at one time or another, like Mr. Hicks. Sometimes we make serious blunders that make everyone think we are morons, but then we have an opportunity to redeem ourselves later. While I am pleased to see in my case AND Dr. Bledsoe's that folks will chime in to defend us and others who are wronged on this list, I think it is time to draw this discussion to a close. I will ask Mr. Hicks that if he gets the opportunity to redeem himself, please take that opportunity. I figure you are not a bad person, but I think that you just made a poor judgment in posting this to the list. Every one of us has an axe to grind with someone in our EMS lives, but we all need to be careful not to take that axe and chop at them in public. ALL of us. If we have concerns about something that is going on in our industry, we can post things about that in a professional manner. But we need to be careful not to undermine what we need to be doing in this business, helping each other and trying to find ways to come together and gain unity. Gene Gandy taught me one time that when I write an e-mail that " feels good " , I should reread it, walk away from it for a while, come back and reread it again - consider leaving it in the outbox overnight to reread again, and THEN send it if I still need to. Many of my posts have gone into the trash.... LOL I hope you all have a great holiday season. And, Dr. Bledsoe, I hope you feel like I have - that you got a great Christmas present silver lining out of an otherwise negative thing. We support you and love you and hope that you will continue to help us in EMS in Texas. Jane Hill
Guest guest
A quick sidebar: The freedom to speak our minds is not " awarded by the constitution. " The bill of rights reminds all of us that these rights are endowed by the creator. Government no more has the right to take these rights from us than it does to give them to us. Steve Pike Re: Dr. Bledsoe Ok....I have to say something. I didn't attend both classes at the conference, however, I did go to the " Myths of EMS " class. Both out of curiosity, and because I wanted to hear Dr. Bledsoe speak. I went knowing he was going to discuss some very controversial things, and went with an open mind. Dr. Bledsoe is entitled to his opinion, and to interpret the facts as he wishes. That is a freedom awarded us by the constitution. The very essence of being an American is the freedom to do these things, along with the freedom of speech. Not everyone will agree with us, and not everything we say will be taken as it is meant. Sometimes we mean one thing and it comes across sounding like we mean a completely different thing. I for one didn't agree with everything he said, but then again, I am entitled to that opinion, the same as he is entitled to his. Frequently Dr. Bledsoe makes comments that he knows are going to be very inflamatory, but he knows that up front. I personally feel however, that he could have done a little less name calling during his lectures. That's my $0.02 for what it's worth. Guest guest
To the entire Texas EMS Listserver Family: In reference to emtpintx2002: I have just spoken with Hicks, and this is NOT his yahoo profile. Until 5 minutes ago, he was NOT even subscribed to the Texas EMS listserver. himself will be emailing Doc about this, and (undoubtedly) posting to this list as well, in reply to this entire situation. I have a good idea what is going on with this entire affair, and have personally emailed Bob Kellow, Donn , and Mike Reid, as well as Doc himself. Stay Safe, Barry E. Guest guest
Talk about stirring the pot. I did attend Dr Bledsoe's presentations at the conference. He gave informative referenced facts that could not be disputed by Dr . You will have a hard time getting folks to throw stones at someone who is as highly respected as is. He has been a strong advocate for EMS for over 20 years. Where do you get off slamming someone you probably don't even know? I wonder what we might find in your past, but then again you don;t even have the guts to sign your post. Do us all a favor, don't stand behind your so called " standing in the medical community " . Guest guest
We had the CIS. discussion for months on this list and every body knows there is a wide discussion both for and against CIS.. Dr Bledsoe and I have argued over many different areas of ems and I am going to say this once Dr Bledsoe has only the best interest for ems no matter what his stated opinion on a particular topic is and his character should never be attacked whether you agree with his opinion or not. Guest guest
People, After reading the posts about Dr. Bledsoe and the resonses to Mr. Hicks it makes me ask a few questions...does Mr. Hicks not have the right to express his opinion about someone else? Is there not a Constitutional right to say what ever you feel about who or what ever you like? I dont know Dr. Bledsoe but if he has been suspended for the infractions that are listed, that is something serious. if Dr. Bledsoe was treating one of your relatives I believe you would feel different about him. I understand tht he has done alot for EMS, but guess what, so do every ceritfied EMS personnel in Texas that do this job day in and day out. Dont vindicate a person to the point of trash talking someone else. THANK YOU for letting me speak MY opinion. Troy Beasley EMT-P

Guest guest
Hello all: I just returned from an EMS conference in Alabama and Mississippi and found myself to be the center of attention. I kind of figured this would come to light after a few phone calls I received after my debate with Dr. . Some CISM insiders said the information was floating around again in CISM circles. Although I do not believe I owe anybody an explanation, I will provide the story for those who are indeed interested. It details the darkest days of my life--but led to some of the best days in my 47 years on this earth. This is it. In 1999, I became critically-ill. I thought I had an ulcer flare-up as I was having a problem with ulcers. I was running two EDs, serving as medical director for multiple EMS agencies, writing books, and constantly on the road. The abdominal pain became worse and worse until one night in February of 1999 when the pain became unbearable. I suffered through it assuming it was ulcers, but got no better. I took various pain medications (some containing acetaminophen). Finally, at 3:00 AM I drove myself to my ED. There, it was found that I had gall stones in my common bile duct and my liver enzymes were markedly elevated (thanks in part to the acetaminophen). I was admitted and the next day underwent a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. There, they found my liver was markedly inflamed. I really never woke up from surgery. I was transported by ambulance to Baylor in Dallas and placed in the transplant ICU and awaited a liver transplant. There, I approached death. Three days after admission, I received Last Rites of the Catholic Church from Father Mark Seitz. Friends and family came from all over. They were preparing to give me a pig liver until a human liver became available. My prognosis was poor. However, Dan DeMarco. MD, one of my doctors, said let's check another set of enzymes. He did and they had started down. My liver turned around. It was a slow recovery--but finally I woke up. Dan told me what had happened. I lost approximately 70% of my liver cells--fortunately they re-grow and they have. I went home finally--very weak and very depressed--after coming so close to death. My recovery was slow and complicated by chronic pain from an old back injury. Over time, I became addicted to Vicodin that was prescribed by my doctors. My situation worsened. I wrote prescriptions for family members (which was wrong). Finally, I was in such a bad place that I self-reported to the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and sought help. I signed an agreed order suspending my license for 6 months so that I would not have the temptation to self-prescribe. At that point, I wanted nothing to do with medicine or anything in life. After months in a funk, I went to a physician drug treatment program in Atlanta. I hated it--but it was the best thing I ever did. That was almost 2 years ago. I notified several key people about what was going on knowing that things would eventually become known to the entire EMS and medical community. One of the EMS publishers (not Brady or Mosby) circulated the Board notice to all of the major EMS magazines and news sources. Every person I contacted about the " email gossip " cared nothing about the " gossip. " They just wanted to know if I was OK and what they could do to help. Brady was marvelous. My editor sent numerous flowers, gifts and updates to my wife Emma. They stayed in touch with me and held some projects I was working on. I came back and wanted to hide from the embarrassment that this would all bring. Friends and family said, " , are you afraid somebody will find out you're human after all? " My wife showed me all of the wonderful email and letters I received from you all when I was sick. Dr. DeMarco also took care of Mickey Mantle when he was in Baylor. He said that Baylor had more calls and visitors for me than he did for Mickey. I was humbled. So, I decided that the best defense is a good offense. I came back swinging. I have written and published more in the last 2 years than I ever had. I have been invited to speak at more conferences than I could possibly attend. Also, by taking on controversy I knew that this issue would be thrown in my face again. I reapplied to have my suspension stayed and that was approved. I have not decided yet whether I want to return to the practice of medicine--but suspect I will some time next year. So that is my story and I'll say nothing else about it. I am not proud of it--neither am I ashamed. I am human and humans have frailties. My liver is normal. My only medications are for hypertension. My biggest problem now is not getting enough exercise and losing weight. But, I am not afraid to tell the truth and sign my name unlike the chicken shit who posted the anonymous post. What goes around, comes around. Thanks for taking the time to read this post. You can think of me what you want. I am going to continue to do what I have been doing. If anybody desires any additional information on this sordid aspect of my life, contact me off the list. And, to those of you who stuck up for me when I was in Alabama, thanks. I won't forget it. And for those who posted the crap, it does not deter me in the least--only strengthens my convictions to continue what I am doing. E. Guest guest
Let's worry no longer about who made the post, why they made the post, or how they made the post. I have learned that you cannot argue with either arogance or ignorance. Let's put all this " Bledsoe " stuff behind us and get to the issues at hand. The National Registry of EMTs reports that registrations for EMT-Intermediates is falling. In Alabama this weekend, I learned that they are no longer using EMT-Is. But, in Vermont EMT-Is are the highest level of training. Is there a need for EMT-I? What about the talk of converting EMT-I to an expanded role called Fire Medic? BEB E.
