Hello Jen

No, I wasnt trying to pick a fight, I genuinely didnt understand what

you meant. In my experience, ppl rarely air views endorsing illegal

drug use (the marijuana you referred to) as a means of coping unless

they do so ironically. Also, in my experience, ppl even more rarely do

so indicating parity with alcohol use (since alcohol is legal, they

usually say that the particular illegal drug has more favorable

qualities, usually pot), and even more rarely parity with prescription

drug use (which they are often strongly opposed to). Typically,

comments like these are nearly always used to indicate disapproval of

any drug use, and especially so on a list like this where there is a

likelihood that members may have had problems with excessive drug use.

I am dismayed almost beyond annoyance to see how prescription drugs

are so frequently treated as being in no way different from

recreational drugs, often in the manner as if the reader is stupid

if not immediately understanding this supposed unprejudiced wisdom,

when in reality the differences are so numerous that I hardly know

where to start in saying them, and the prejudices are in reality

against responsible med use to the point where a person killing

themself with alcohol or another drug will not countenance taking a

prescription drug that could help them stop. It actually suffices me

to say here that in reality the differences between just *prescribed*

drugs are so vast that it is in fact ridiculous to talk abt even them

completely collectively, and the fact that ppl do so is itself

evidence that ppl's views abt drugs are almost entirely socially

constructed around how drugs are obtained and used, and not the actual

properties of the drugs themselves.

So, my impression was that your comment was an ironic " a drug is a

drug " statement meant to indicate that abstinence from everything is

desirable, rather than an endorsement of controlled use of something,

and I still am not sure which of the two it is, which is why I have

asked (and would still like to know).

" ppl's views abt drugs are almost entirely socially

-- Pete, I agree with this (broadly), but the sense in which I find it true

does not, I hope, pass me off as a conventional " cultural materialist " ,

Hi Pete:

A bit " off the wall " but I enjoyed my bike trip in the UK! The British

people were very friendly and hospitable and I learned more about the

English culture. I particularly enjoyed the English pastry and pies!

Yummm! My cycling took me from London on train to York where I spent the

night and left in the morning traveling south to Selby then West to

Barnsley>Doncaster>Warrington>Manchester>Liverpool> then South to >

Witchurch> Shrewsbury> Hereford> Cardiff, Wales. After cylcing to Bristol

and the Severn, I took the train back again to London. WOW, what a trip! I

felt tempted to patronize the wonderful pubs (especially on Mathew Street in

Liverpool) but my internal voice kicked in telling me it was not a good idea

since I was on a bike and with a rather short travel itinerary. Besides, I

did not want to go home in a box or straight jacket or both! Perhaps next

time. The trip was solo as well. The only problem I had aside from getting

lost in London several times was the theft of my bike which was insured.

Been shopping for new bike now but not at Harrods! Good to hear from you my

friend!

Cheers

I was a little surprised at this myself, even though I'd seen the

view in others, and vaguely remember having it myself in my last

years of drinking (that one can't relax without chemical help).

Here's the message, subject name " Re: new subscriber " , that originally

prompted Pete's response, though I can't find an earlier message that this

one refers to:

As I realized more clearly during an earlier thread on this topic

in the last couple of months, there are people who use and abuse

prescription drugs and street drugs interchangably, and can only see

a " drug " as a substance to get high with. They may both be expensive,

and the only difference between them being one has to manipulate a

doctor to get 'legal' drugs. There may be lots of 'deprogramming',

from both 'street' attitudes about drugs and those from the 12-step

community, for someone with that background to see something prescribed

by a doctor and taken as prescribed to be truly helpful.

As you are surely trying to point out, recreational 'use' of

prescription drugs completely ignores the research that goes on to

test substances for effectiveness and safety, what amounts are good

tradeoffs between effectiveness and side-effects, and many other things

that can make a prescription drug $10 per pill (even if it doesn't give

you a buzz).

Surely ignorance of medicine as well as social programming are

responsible for this.

I think it's funny how much power is given to a word. There were people

in AA who wouldn't take prescription drugs, but often made purchases at

" herb shops " . What makes an " herb " safe and a " drug " not? The name " herb " ,

apparently. Most people think these two things are mutually exclusive, and

have no clue how arbitrarily a substance might get the label " herb " or

the label " drug " .

There are many societal beliefs about " drugs " , epitomized in many

ways, such as in the Rolling Stones song " Mother's Little Helper " . I can

see several interpretations of this song.

One more comment - through all this, people who prescription drugs

the same as 'street' drugs DO know the difference between different

types of drugs. I've never heard of anyone 'recreationally using' (for

just one example) antibiotics.

One phrase that used to drive me crazy was " herbal tea. " What did

they think regular tea was, pastrami?

You can of course make a type of tea, or " herbal infusion " , as " tea-head "

slang has it, using the weed with roots in hell, though the effects are not

nearly as subtle or immediate in their soporific impact as those of street

T.E.A., which is widely used and cheaply available throughout the lands of

Britain,

ok see I feel like this group as become WAY to intellectual. See, I can't

even spell that! What I am I saying in my retardedness, is that human beings

have stress. Lots of it. I guess millions of years ago, they had herbs and

shit they used to relax. Some people relax by reading, sewing ect. Some

people have a beer, a joint, a valium. One thing I do know, even though I am

NOT a scholar( can't spell that either) is the mind needs to escape

sometimes. How you do it is up to you. I do feel a drug is a drug. The only

reason some are illegal is because the drug companies want you to prescribe

to there " legal " method of relaxation. The only beer comercial that I can

relate to is the Corona one where they through the beeper into the ocean. So

just keep in mind that when you write to me that I am SIMPLE. Lots of times I

have no idea what you are talking about.

Here's my opinion. You know what we're talking about, you just don't have

the specialized vocabulary that comes with studying a particular subject

in-depth. You surely seem as intelligent as me or anyone else here (and I

consider myself intelligent). If I am writing in a way that you can't

understand I would like you to tell me, because I don't want to come off

like the only people who matter are people who talk like a textbook.

As a practicing intellectual, I admire your spelling (only " as " for " has "

and " there " for " their " at a glance -- pretty dam' good in 2000 ad). The

same guy told you you wuz retarded as probably the one who told me I was

mad, an addict, a loser, a . . . -- but I just cannot bring myself to agree

with him/her. There is a lot of stress around (anxious communications are a

recognised sign of it). But I'd sooner be stressed out of my mortal skull

and alive than lying down in my grave waiting for the stepNazis to finish me

off.

I dont agree Ben, knowing whether a drug is psychoactive or not

hardly

counts as knowing abt them. I accept that someone who has abused a

prescription drug will know how it affects them (at least in the

mnanner in which they abused it, that is). However, in my experice

they know nothing at all abt drugs they have not abused, and I doubt

anyone abuses every single kind available. Antideps are often called

" tranquillisers " , the latter itself including totally different kinds

of drugs. Also, they may never have abused them, but I have heard of

NA folks being wary of using antibiotics or vitamin supplements

because " a drug is a drug " !

I am not sure if I am the " dude " being referred to here, but if I am,

I thought what I wrote was clear enough - when ppl compare prescribed

and illegal drugs and alcohol, they nearly always do so in order to

criticise their use. As Jen you appear to view your husband's

excessive drinking as evidence against controlled drinking in

general,

imo it was a reasonable inference that this comparison was another

ironic one like the ones regularly trotted out by XAs - and you still

havent, to my mind, made it clear whether the sentiment was sincere

or

ironic.

My grandmother lived in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California, a very small

town about 30 miles north of San Diego. When Doug makes reference to

Cardiff, it always reminds me of my Grandma. :)
