Guest guest
Hi Jay: I used to take Glucosamine for quite a while and then Celebrex for about 9 months before my BHR on October 18, 2001. I live in California and looked into the possibility of getting the procedure covered by my health insurance carrier here. It turned out to be cheaper to have the procedure done in England by one of the best surgeons in the world. I'd be happy to discuss this with you further. There's a lot to tell. Guest guest
Now, I 'm confused again. I'm schedled for a resurfacing of one hip with Dr. Kennedy in Sarasota, he uses the Conserve Plus. I will have to do the other hip later. Is the Birmingham Hip Replacement that much better? I've heard that Mr. Treacy has done more than 3500 resurfacings which is very impressive indeed. Guest guest
> Does someone know who does this procedure in the > Northeast/Connecticut? JAY, As far as I know there are only 13 OS doing the surgery in the US. Some are in ongoing clinical trials and some may be out of devices. That you have to check by calling the OS. The list is on activejoints.com. I think the closest OS for you would be in Baltimore, there are two. Trudy
Guest guest
: Hi Jay, I live in Wisconsin, looked into trying to get my insurance co. to pay for resurfacing here in the states but was denied twice. I was having a great deal of pain and developed a bad limp, so I decided to contact Mr. Treacy in Birmingham. Had surgery May 19, 2001. It was a great experience,if surgery can be great, but post-op my hip pain was gone immediately. My experience in England was terrific, Mr. Treacy was a Godsend for me and his entire staff was the best. Can give you more details if you like. Guest guest
Diane Mr Treacy has done more than 3500 TOGETHER WITH Mr McMinn over a 9 year period or so. They are the pioneers of the BHR here in the UK. There appears to be very little difference between the US devices and the BHR. The main considerations are the experience of our surgeons and the financial question if your insurance doesn't cover the procedure. Guest guest
Sorry Diane but to my knowledge there are no McMinn/Treacy trained resurfacing surgeons in the US because the BHR isn't available there. Nonetheless you do have some fine surgeons in Mont, Gross etc. They may not have installed as many prostheses as M & T but I'm sure that they are more than well experienced enough. Guest guest
Diane, Perhaps you should look at De Smet in Gent. Cost about half of Great Britain. or Richie can speak to quality of service. Richie flew home one week after op. Ticket from US to Brussels ~$400. Family can stay in family wing of Gent University Hospital for ~$15 day. According to , third most experienced in world, I understand trained for a year under MM/Treacy. If you go for Valentines Day we can compare notes! Guest guest
my husband believes that hospital care in England is not good. Dear Diane: I have to take issue with this opinion. I found the nursing staff at the Royal Orthopedic in Birmingham to be first class and extremely caring. Mr. Treacy and his team are A-1. From my experience with US hospitals, give me the Brits anytime. Their whole system is different as is their culture of nursing. I'm also puzzled by the cost issue. I assume you are covered by insurance. My medical care cost was about $13,000 US. If I had the surgery in the US, I understand it would have been about double that. Sure there is an accommodation expense, but even with a two week stay in a really nice small hotel and roundtrip airfare from the West Coast to England, the total was still under $16,000. That is a chunk of change but given the alternative, unless you're covered by insurance, I don't see how you can compare that price with the cost over here. From what I've read on this site, Dr. DeSmet in Belgium is probably the least expensive. I have no personal experience with him but several people on this site have. So if cost is an issue, I still don't see how the US cost can be less. Des

AAArrrrggh Tough to work that way. Diane Diane, I am an R.N. here in the states, and I found the care in England to be quite good. I stayed at the Priory Hospital in Birmingham. The hospital staff were for the most part very friendly. the hospital was clean, the food was great, they had a chef on staff, and each room overlooked a court yard garden. I think that the hospital was part of their private health care network. By day 2 I was sitting in upright chairs, and Mr Treacy said the only restrictions I should adhear to would be the use of the sticks, also known as canes, for 4 weeks and when sleeping I should use a pillow between my legs. By the third day I was able to walk, with the use of my 2 sticks, down to the garden and enjoy the sunshine. This was very theraputic for me. I spent a week in the hospital and from there rented a cottage in a nearby town. My wife and I were then able to do quite a bit of sightseeing. I had no trouble navigating on and off busses and trains to take in the sights. I didn't set any land speed records, but it was nice to be out and about. I could have returned to work in 6 weeks, but since my job requires me to be on my feet for 12-14 hours 3-4 times each week I stayed out a bit longer. Good luck, Mike S. Thank you Des, I think the insurance will pay most of this in this country, but I don't think they will pay anything if I go overseas. Guest guest
Diane I see Richie beat me to the email address. My experience is that DeSmet answers his personally. He suggested to me that he could move me to hotel after two days. Also was ready to let me travel home to US after 5-6 days, but I intend to be in Belgium for a total of 16 days. He suggested that by then I should be able to " run back to America " . t > > > Diane, > > Perhaps you should look at De Smet in Gent. Cost about half of > > > > Does he have an email address? Have already emailed De Smet. Thank you so much. I must say that not being able to sit very much for six weeks is somewhat daunting. Hard to stand at the computer!!! And then doing it all over again for the second hip....aaarrrrhh. But to do be able to fun again eventually and continue on with an active life...that's fantastic.
