Guest guest
Debbie.... yep, my wife has mandated the One a Day chewables with Calcium/D to take in the AM and PM; I also have to take iron...but that's usually with lunch. I do take a sublingual B12 every day....along with a B12 shot every 3 weeks....just to stay on top of things; I've a family history of pernicious anemia. Geeez, we're a pill popping bunch here! Guest guest
Um, your calcium. I think I've heard One a Day are the least absorbable vite out there. You might try a Centrum equivalent. Store brand is OK, but read a Centrum label and match it up as best you can. It's not nearly enough calcium. Our doc calls for 1500 mg ELEMENTAL calcium. So, pretend you could gag down tums? If the front of the bottle says 350 mg, flip it over, read the fine print and see that it is really 200mg elemental. So, 8 per day. I could do 1 or 2, but not EIGHT. I take mine in pill form. But some folks do the Viactiv. Each one is 500mg elemental, so 3 Tootise Rolls a day and it's done. The problem is not to build yourself a kidney stone by eating a BOX a day. Wal-Mart's probably the cheapest place on earth for these. And there's a liquid, 1 tablespoon a day does it all. Then there's chewable wafers, and so on and so on. On a serious note, we have 2 fellas in our support group who are suffering from osteoporosis. Very rare in men, and both are young. One is mid-30's, the other is MY AGE (so that makes him YOUNG, OK?) and both are in constant pain. You don't want to mess with your calcium. *** Please reply to me at: vitalady@... *** Thanks, www.vitalady.com Re: Calcium > > > Debbie.... > > yep, my wife has mandated the One a Day chewables with Calcium/D to take > in the AM and PM; I also have to take iron...but that's usually with > lunch. Guest guest
Seems like I could be using a bit more calcium then the chewables that I've got to deal with...I'll take a look at the makeup and see what I'm scarfing down. Thanks for straightening me out.....yet, once AGAIN! Life was a lot simpler before signing on here!<G> Dan rny 10.13.98 Waaaaaaaaaaay Down Vitalady wrote: > > > > Um, your calcium. Guest guest
I know, I know. My husband refers to me a nuisance, too. What can I say? Guest guest
, This is an antique, but yes, anyone whose food doesn't pass through the stomach is going to lose SOME of the fats 'n oils, so we just supplement the fat solubles with dry versions. Why find out LATER that you needed more D or calcium, you know? *** Please reply to me at: vitalady@... *** Thanks, www.vitalady.com Re: calcium > From: Bkurn@... > > In a message dated 01/25/2000 8:21:19 PM US Mountain Standard Time, > vitalady@... writes: > > > If you are taking a gel cap (or soft gel) which usually > > suspends the supplement in oil then you won't absorb anything as we don't > > absorb the oil. > > > Is this true for all RNYer's or just distal? > > Thanks, > > > ---------------------------
Guest guest
Sue, Remember you've got no stomach to DIGEST your calcium and the less absorptive part of your intestine is all that's available for absorption. So, of the 1500, you're not getting 100%. Yes, you need D fore sure. But Viactiv is OK. Although they say and it is proven that citrate is the most absorbable form, my husband and I both get better labs with the " lesser " forms. I do fine with cheapo carbonate from Costco and he does great on the Twin Lab CalQuick liquid, which is the lowest form. The one you'll TAKE is the best one for YOU. But I tend to agree that for us, spreading things out will enhance absorption. And of course, never take anything but Vite C with iron. *** Please reply to me at: vitalady@... *** Thanks, www.vitalady.com

I'm taking Iron in the AM, & everything else for lunch & dinner. I wonder about the milk thistle.... I wouldn't think that would hurt anything at any time... but who knows. Guest guest
, We use Calci-Mix form R & D labs (). It is calcium carbonate (1250 mg per capsule). It is really easy to use because it disolves quickly and completely in just a little liquid. It is the one that was recommended to us. The only problem with it I was told by one of a's doctors it that Calcium carbonate is not as easily absorbed as calcium citrate so she suggested I give her a little more than the RDA and make sure I give it with food. You might want to check on the amount if you decide to use it. Anyway, we like it because it is so easy to use since it dissolves so well. I know others on the list use cal/mag/zinc supplements that they like a lot. laura (mom to a and big brother )
