Dear Allida,

What kind of discomfort are you having? Sounds familiar......

Last month I was experiencing a lot of intestinal pain and thought

nothing of it because it had happened on and off for months. But this

time it was unrelenting. I left work early and headed to the hospital

like a robot, my subconscious had taken over my brain. I got there in

time as I was headed for a perforation of the intestinal tract. In the

ER I was diagnosed with diverticulitis. I'm only 45 years old. No one

could believe it.

After 4 days in the hospital and given a special diet and an IV of Cipro

and Flagl I felt like a million bucks and couldn't wait to go home. But

those antibiotics kill your appetite!

A colonoscopy a few weeks later confirmed the diverticulitis, and

thankfully no cancer, as they were suspecting (trying hard not to alarm

me further by actually saying that, I saw it in the chart).

The colonoscopy was a piece of cake, so much easier to go through than

the liver biopsy.

So if you hare still having the very dark stools or none at all, please

get it checked out ASAP.

Love,

Hello to nne in Ontario,

My daughter had--among other things--food contamination type issues in the past.

I'm happy to say, she's done GREAT for past 21 months since she had her tonsils

out--NO new obsessions or compulsions--just one or two old habits or quirks she

awhile to finally face and conquer. ?

Anyway, one thing that worked SO well for her was her " Detective Notebook. " In

it we used forms, shared with us by Boston University's Center for Anxiety &

Related Disorders. She would record what bothered her earlier that day or

previous day, and:

1) what her anxiety level ranged from during whole episode,

2) what consequences there were (i.e. missed out on some fun at party, poor

night's sleep, etc.)

3) what probability of the fear (swallowing chicken bones)

4) other comments

Another page of this " detective notebook " would include a plan?i.e. steps to

overcome this particular worry/fear/obsessive thought

In a way, recording this was an exposure activity. Other things for exposures

could include drawing a cartoon about the obsessive thought/fear or writing

silly rhymes or poems about it the fear/obsessive thought. Also, for practical

exposures: steps toward eating meat with bones (smelling it, helping to serve

it, tasting broth made from chicken or other meat, seeing others eat such meats,

touching it to her lips, licking it, one bite, then two bites, etc?)

Not sure of your dd?s age, but a great analogy used in one of the books we used,

perhaps you?re familiar with, is talking about the obsession as ?junk mail.?

Junk that is cluttering her mind, as junk mail can clutter up a counter. It?s

interfering with fun and nice thoughts she should/could be having.

Hope this helps! Sue
