Guest guest
The increasing popularity of Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) has the potential to cause 9-1-1 systems even more problems than cell phones. First, if the Internet connection or computer is down, such as during a power failure, and the VOIP is the only phone service, there is no way to reach 9-1-1. While this is not a problem 9-1-1 can address, I can see this as litigation waiting to happen (don't laugh or underestimate the power of a lawyer's ability to create alternate reality). A more pressing problem is the fact that VOIP does not integrate well with 9-1-1 as the host ISP can be almost anywhere, and standards for integration are non-existent. I think we are going to see this as a big problem as VOIP becomes more popular. Anyone already experiencing VOIP related problems?
