Guest guest
karen and everyone - have any of you experienced being on clear liquids or iv fluids etc; and NOT losing any weight??? it seems that i don't drop any weight unless i am having a severe attack where i am vomiting and/or diarrhea. i think that is peculiar unless my body is changing my metabolism like it does when you are on a diet and regulating the food you are intaking. it is kind of frustrating because i need to lose some more weight and i haven't. i haven't felt like exercising lately and i know that is part of it also. but you would think that when all you are ingesting is liquids that you would lose some. debbie

During this period of time I lost a total of 5 lbs (from 175lbs to 170lbs). This baffled me, as it does yourself, so I asked my doctor why. He stated basically what you said earlier that since you have restricted the amount of food you are eating, your metabolism slows down. I used to go several days in a row without eating anything. Yet, my weight remained stable. Now that I am having regular attacks again, I have lost a total of 15lbs in the last 3 weeks! This is happening now that I am able to eat again (only extremely small amounts and still only one or two meals per day supplemented with Ensure). I know exactly what you mean. You would think that the least we could get out of having to deal with this sickness is the benefit of some weight loss (for those of us who feel we need it). I hope you have more success at losing weight but not at the expense of having more attacks. If I could be assured of never having pancreatic pain (or any of the other symptoms of this disease) if I would gain 50-100lbs I would gain 200lbs! I would readily trade being fat and healthy over being thin and sick with pancreatitis. Andre'

I've had similar experiences - on IV's, in the hospital, nothing except ice chips, & putting on the pounds. What I think may be happening, just a guess, is what is called third-spacing. The fluid from your blood is leached out into the spaces between the body's cells. In effect, you are retaining fluid rather than eliminating through urination. I think it's related to your albuman levels & colloidal pressure in the blood vessels. Sorry I can't give a clearer explaination. Hope the liquids are helping & that you're feeling better. jang

I too have battled a weight problem for the last 6 years and it has really had a negative effect my self esteem. My mother has never been diagnosed with a pancreas problem, however she has so many GI problems and has the all too familiar attacks of pain. I have not been able to persuade her to find a doctor who can give her a diagnosis. However, she has the same problems with keeping weight on and various other problems with being able to tolerate many different things by mouth. I am not having the severity of problems that many of you are experiencing yet and I am feeling very blessed. I was diagnosed 6 years ago, however had been battling severe symptoms for 2 years before they finally got to this point. For 3 years before that I had various episodes and multiple diagnoses. You all know the scenario. Even though I've had 4 hospitalizations over the last 2 years I feel like my situation is no where near as severe as what some of you are experiencing. I'll be honest, it has created some fear knowing that I may be going down the same route one day, however I also find comfort from the information that each of you share so openly and compassionately with us. I feel I've learned more in the two weeks I've been posting that in the past 10 years or so!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've learned there are a variety of treatment options with a variety of different outcomes. No, not all wonderful, but at least I'm not as in the dark as I've been in the past. I look forward to continuing my education about this disease in order to better equip me for my future. You are a wonderful group of people and I am grateful to have found you!!!!!! Thanks to all. Sandy Debbie, I know you are concerned about being overweight. But I must say it is better to be overweight with pancreatitis than underweight. When my pancreas is really acting up but not enough to put me in the hospital, my doc actually tells me to try to get more calories. I never thought I would hear that from a doc as I have always had a weight problem until I got sick. But being underweight has affected so much more for me than how I look. When you're underweight, people comment on how scrawny you look...and constantly ask how you did it. Anyway, from my point of view, better to be overweight than under. (At least right now!) *G* Diane Blessings to you and yours! _______________________________________________________ Get 100% FREE Internet Access powered by Excite Visit http://freelane.excite.com/freeisp ------------------------------------------------------------------------ You have a voice mail message waiting for you at iHello.com: http://click./1/3555/0/_/593940/_/957503896/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ PANCREATITIS SUPPORT NETWORK Online e-mail group To reply to this message hit " reply " or send an e-mail to: Pancreatitisegroups To subscribe to this e-mail group, simply send an e-mail to: Pancreatitis-subscribeegroups
Guest guest
Hello everyone! I hope everyone had a nice fourth. Today at Curves I weighed myself (I was a little apprehensive as it's that time of the month for me) and according to their doctors scale I weigh 279, which is a 72 pound weight loss!!! Next friday I have an appointment, so I'll get an official weight then (as well as my first blood test since the surgery). I'd just thought I would share with people " family " that understands the joy of weight loss. Take Care Open RYN 4-7-03 351/279/???
