RE: Double Implant

My son's school has mentioned that there are a few kids that may be getting

double implants. The children I have seen, who got their implants early (under

1 year of age) are doing great, they have language (both sign and working on

speech). Learn everything you can and listen to your heart as a mother.

Hi!

I was wondering if anyone has done a double cochlear implant. The

people at NYU and my sons Audiologist have recommended it but I'm

wondering if any children with CHARGE have done it. (The surgeon

will let me know if he can do both) they told me to think about it

and consider. I'm not sure I want to do the whole procedure anyway

but I know I have to do it. Now the mention of double implant has

sent me right back to the unsure stage of " am I doing the right

thing for my son? "

My only concern about doing a double would be if they didn't work, the ci's

destroy ANY residual hearing the patient had prior to the surgery (so you

couldn't even go back to aiding the best of the two ears for some sound...)

Just a thought,

I spoke with the DHH specialist at my son's school this morning and his opinion

is this. One implant is good. The technology is still considered new and if

something else were to become available in the future at least you would have on

cochlea available. I don't know if that helps you, but that was another opinion

to put in the hat. I know it's hard.

Thanks that is great. I'll agree to do one ear and leave the better ear either

for new tech. or for aiding if there is a problem or maybe we'll do it at a

later time.

I have to agree that if you implant both ears, you will not be able

to take advantage of new technology that comes along and technology

is changing very fast. My child hears very well with one implant.

When his cables start going bad or other technical difficulties

occur, he is so much more difficult to deal with behaviorally. The

implant has been such a blessing. Thank God for it. My audie told

me that my son was lucky to get an implant because he had other

issues and a few years before you had to be vanilla deaf to get one.

Nice. RMP
