Very interesting Donna. Let us know if you find anything out.

I was speaking with a man from our local Social Security Office on Monday, while at work.. and this little tidbit of information slipped out of him.. whether intentionally, or a well known fact.. I'm not sure.. but it is something of which I wasn't completely aware...

If you are employed, even with a qualifying disability, such as MS... if you have an income of $900 or more in the month.. Social Security will not even open a medical file....

I'm assuming that this little tidbit of information also means that if they don't open a medical file.. you are automatically denied disability benefits...

I wish I could find the Social Security statues or something along that order.. online that I could read them.. in so much as... " I work at Social Security. My job is processing claims. What are my guidelines to grant or deny benefits? " ...

I can find what as a layman, not employed by SS can find.. but I think they just might be two different things.... lol.. If anyone has any idea where I can snoop out such resources, please let me know.. I'd like to read them..

I did read on the SS web site about the $900, although I don't remember where on the site I saw it. I also was told his about this by the SSDI rep that contacted me. I saw a chart on the web site too that listed max incomes, $ per household depending on how many ppl r in household.|}onna wrote: I was speaking with a man from our local Social Security Office on Monday, while at work.. and this little tidbit of information slipped out of him.. whether intentionally, or a

here is the paragraph that talks about the $900 and the link to the entire page. http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10095.html How your earnings affect your Social Security benefits During the trial work period, there are no limits on your earnings. During the 36-month extended period of eligibility, you usually can make no more than $900 a month or your benefits will stop. But, the work expenses you have as a result of your disability are deducted when we count your earnings to see if they can help you keep more of your benefits. If you have extra work expenses, your earnings could be substantially higher than $900 before they affect your benefits. This substantial earnings amount usually increases each year. We deduct work expenses related

to your disability from your earnings before we determine if you are still eligible for benefits. These expenses may include the cost of any item or service you need to work, even if the item or service also is useful to you in your daily living. Examples include prescription drugs, transportation to and from work (under certain conditions), a personal attendant or job coach, a wheelchair or any specialized work equipment. nne Svihlik wrote: Very interesting Donna. Tammy,

The "Trial Work Period" only comes into play after you have been you've been approved and are receiving disability benefits. I am now if or around my sixth month of my nine month "Trial Work Period"...

A "Trial Work Period", is... how can I say this correctly... Any month in which you earn a gross amount of $640.00 or more, is considered a countable month toward the nine month period (which amounts to 80 hours in a month at $8.00 an hour), is considered one month in the nine month trial work period.

What that amounts to, is that so long as you stay under the $640 (it does go up in January 2008) per month, you haven't started a "Trial Work Period" and there isn't any cause for worry about them saying you are no longer disabled and are now able to work full time, therefore losing your benefits...

During nine month "Trial Work Period" you can earn up to $900.00 a month (it's the $640.00 that qualifies it as a TWP month) and you don't lose any benefits until you go over the $900.00.

Of course all of this only pertains to a person who already has been approved and is receiving disability benefits.... The $900.00 gross he mentioned was IF you were applying for benefits, but still working, and grossing that amount. They don't even open the medical on a claim... so I'm thinking that it's an automatic denial... but that's what I'm going to be researching...

It's a whole complicated science, I think.. LOL... and I'm learning as quickly as I can..

There is no " other income " problem other than being disabled long

term for eligibility for Social Security Disability Insurance/Medicare.

The wealthy can get that, too. The $900.00 (more or less) limit is for SSI or

Supplemental Security Income/Medicaid combined with SSDI/Medicare.

I will spare you all a link, but Donna is essentially correct--I think. . .

Typing out loud again,

You are correct! My age is now showing. I am so old that I am

now considered to be receiving regular SSA retirement benefits,

and am no longer classified under SSDI, which I had first. However,

I did call the SSA national phone number to find out whether one

could have " assetts " and still receive SSDI; they said that this was

true, and that as I did, one would today receive one's appropriate

amount for the date of the application, but that WORKING income

could bounce one off the SSDI qualification, which makes sense to

me. I lasted nine months on the trial work period and collapsed

before ten months (hope springs eternal), and ended up back on

SSDI. I cannot complain; this system, even though not tax sup

ported by the truly wealthy in taxes, has saved me, my body,

and certainly, my sanity--sort of.

Love to you, Lynn and group; I do try!

We can has assets for SSDI but we can't have most assets to qualify for "extra help" with our meds costs. I don't have any assets but I know some do so they don't qualify even though their monthly income is below the allowed amount. I am just over on the income so I don't get extra help. I know the subject wasn't "extra help" but your email reminded me of it. Sharon This email is a natural hand made product.
