Dear Keely,

I would have to echo what Barb is saying. You have a conflict of interest and particpating on this site is one thing and advertising is quite another. Also as a practising nurse for 30 years there are some things that are not fixable but that does not mean that it is a lost cause. Its never over until the fat lady sings or until you want it to be. You need to respect that it is better to deal in realities.

Which is what people on this web site are doing and I might add doing it very well.

Thanks,

Ali

I would just like to remind one and all that there is no such thing as incurable.

Leap of faith

Hoping to raise £2,000: Gemma Wiggins with Charlie and his mum Colette

Sisters' 10,000ft jump to highlight child liver disease

Just before Charlie's 11th birthday doctors at King's College Hospital in London diagnosed him with having rare liver disease.

Colette ' world turned upside down when she found out that her son's condition was incurable and her youngster will need a liver transplant if his condition deteriorates.

Colette of Northleigh, Furzton, became worried when Charlie continually complained he had stomach pains.

The 32-year-old who is living with her partner said: "I thought he had appendicitis so I took him to Milton Keynes Hospital but after several blood tests Charlie had to be referred to King's College Hospital."

After a few days, Charlie's condition worsened as he was unable to keep his food down and lost weight.

"He was feeling tired and irritable all the time and could not cope with life anymore. All Charlie wanted to do was to sit in front of the television," said Colette.

Since his diagnosis Charlie has been put on steroids and vitamin supplements which has stabilised his condition.

Colette was devastated when she first learnt about the condition and was baffled when doctors told her they didn't know if Charlie had been born with the disease.

"I was a huge shock and I started to think if the rest of my family had got it. It was a mystery to me and I started questioning myself if the disease was hereditary."

Charlie who is a pupil at Loughton Middle School missed a month off school after he was diagnosed with sclerosing cholangitis, a rare condition that causes damages to the bile ducts making it difficult for the liver to function properly.

According to figures from the Child Liver Disease Foundation there are over 100 different liver diseases that can affect children and at least two children are diagnosed every day with the disease and every week two children nationwide are diagnosed as needing a liver transplant.

Colette, an administration assistant at Daimler Chrysler in Caldecotte, said: "In front of Charlie I stayed strong and would even joke about it but in private I cried for him.

"I felt so useless knowing that no matter what I did I couldn't take away his illness.

"There is no cure for liver disease and if he keeps on having relapses he will need a liver transplant. I hope that day will never come."

Although there are no special dietary requirements for Charlie, he needs to stay away from fatty foods.

"Charlie does get depressed from time to time but he has been tough and knows he cannot drink alcohol when he gets older," said Colette.

In a bid to raise more awareness of childhood liver disease, Colette and her sister Gemma Wiggins jumped 10,000 feet when they made a parachute jump at Hinton Airfield on Saturday.

So far, they have raised £1,400 but hope to make closer to £2,000 so they can donate the money to the Children's Liver Disease Foundation - which is the only organisation of its kind in the UK that provides professional, emotional support to families.

Anyone wishing to make a donation can contact Colette on 01908 867991 or log on to www.childliver disease.org for more information.

I am certainly not advertising. If you're talking about my signature, it's automatic. I can remove it if a number of people are having a "problem" with it. However, I see all kinds of graphics and links and other items at the end of other people's emails; it never occurred to me that this would be an issue.

I am in this group because I'm trying to find out as much as I can about PSC, since I'm currently undergoing tests to determine if I have it.

If it's your opinion that "reality" is a doctor coming to your bedside and saying that what you have is incurable, I beg to differ. That's not reality, it's an assault.

Respectfully,

Keely,

Thank you for your input; I hope you do well with your health and

your foundation. My daughter in law teaches theraputic yoga in

Phoenix and works with natural healers. She recently received

certification to work under the supervision of physicians and has a

totally full schedule. She began her work in hospice and was

teaching regular yoga professionally for many years. I am sure her

practice is different from yours in methods, but it has had a

trememdous positive effect upon her clients. Thank you again,

Tee
