Guest guest
Hi Kim ... I am wondering why, if you are a pre-op, you are on a list for those who have already had the surgery? My understanding is that this list deals with issues related to longer term post ops and I would be reluctant to get into ANOTHER list that deals with preop issues such as the one you mention. I understand that Dave welcomed preops to LURK but if you have questions, there is the big OSSG list and a myriad of others that cater specifically to pre op needs. Guest guest
Annie: Congratulations! Just my $.02 worth here. First of all, you may very well get insurance to pay for a panniculectomy, but probably won't get them to pay for a tummy tuck. (I think the distinction you're making here is removing an apron as opposed to making skin smooth and pretty.) Just a thought about waiting. Secondly, I had a tummy tuck twenty years ago when I had lost this much weight before and kept it off for a while. I then regained from 180 to over 300, lost about 3/4 of it several times, then had WLS and am down to my present 180. Anyway, my stomach won't be on the cover of Men's Health Magazine, but it only wrinkles when I bend over. (Like to tie my shoes.) It looks a whole lot better than I ever thought it was going to look. So the point of my second point is that if they do a nice job with the panniculectomy now, relocate your navel and pretend you're at goal, you may find that it will be good enough for the rest of your life, even after you lose some more. I bet your plastic surgeon can clue you in on this better than I can. I only lost about 120 pounds, but since I had that tuck a long time ago, my arms are a little funky, my chest is a little funky, my upper legs are a little funky, but to fix it all is more than I'm up for right now. Walking is the only thing I do. Weight training might actually fix the empty arms and chest. But where do you stop? And it's all expensive and takes time. Guest guest
Arianna: Losing 4 pounds a month at a year is pretty good. I still had some little months and bigger months at that point. And the funny thing is, people notice you losing weight and you look better, but sometimes it's the last few pounds we lose that really make an impact. In other words, 10 pounds now may show up a lot more than 30 pounds did when you were 350. Anyway, that's been my experience. I don't think the trail mix vs. the cottage cheese is such a big difference...what could the calorie difference be? But since you didn't ask my opinion, I'll give it to you anyway. The shredded wheat doesn't sound like much, but starting off the day with protein might be a good idea. Like scrambled eggs or designer protein or something. Or the cottage cheese in the morning. I don't know. I do know that protein is the only diet instruction that any doctor ever gave me that I follow for some reason. I'm up a pound this morning, but I had salty popcorn at the movie, Mexican food last night and my eyes are puffy, so I'm hoping it's water. It looks like here in the 15th month that I'll be losing NOTHING. Are we ever satisfied? My goal was to get to 210 pounds and maintain it. Here I at 183 and bitchin' cause I weighed 182 or something yesterday. I really want to see the 170's on the scale. It seemed when I first dipped under 185 that maintaining between 180 and 185 was a good goal, but I've still got that monkey on my back. OF course, I still eat whatever the heck I want, when I want it. I've eaten too much sugar lately, but I wasn't walking for three weeks getting over my facelift. I noticed that just being back to walking for two days now that I didn't crave a cookie in the middle of the afternoon. I'll be back out there today! Also, for those of you having *any* surgery after WLS, my appetite sure got bigger when I was recovering this time from the facelift. Don't know if it was my body trying to get revved back up or the emotional havoc of the anesthesia and all the neurotic stuff that goes with having your face re-arranged. But, it's settling back down. Thanks for contributing to this list. I'm psyched. I think it's going to work. Guest guest
Can you believe hear we are, having lost amounts of weight we would never have believed, obsessing over a pound or two? Or pissed that we are not down even further? I started at 220, and hoped for the ability to maintain 180. I am now 16 months post op and I am weighing about 158 at 5'7. But why oh why can't it be 140? We are greedy little compulsive people, and I wish I could tell you why. Part of me thinks it is because we can't believe this has actually happened to us and tomorrow we will wake up and be huge again. I am a big advocator of NOT weighing every day. I think once a month is PLENTY. Ask my friend . I bitch at her all the time about it. Thanks for the interesting posts everyone... Guest guest
Jan: I hear you. I am 30 pounds better off than I ever dreamed and I want to see 3 more pounds. I wish I knew why. I've never, ever been good enough because I was fat. (I'ts hard not to say " because I am fat " ) Now that the weight's gone, that feeling of " I'm just not good enough and the good life is just around the corner as soon as I lose all this weight " won't go away. I can't just " be here now. " I guess that I just don't know how feeling okay about myself, ESPECIALLY my weight and body is all about. I went to a party the other night and got so many compliments that it went from silly to almost anxiety-provoking. But in my head, I'm not a slim person yet. In my pants I am....34 waist and that's resting right on the hip-bone! What are we going to do??? Guest guest
I find when I start to slow down that upping my water intake, even just a glass or two a day, helps. Also, I would definitely get rid of the nuts. Very high fat. I do cereal every morning. It is quick and easy. I buy little 4-oz cottage cheese that Knudsen puts out. They are great for carrying for a snack or a lunch. B in California Arrianna wrote: > > > Hi All, > Im Arrianna from Florida and had my RNY on Aug. 4th 1998. I was 350 and > could barely move. Guest guest
I totally agree with you about not weighing every day. I do once a week. But I have threatened on weeks when I am up one or two pounds to just throw the stupid scale away. I know what my body and my clothes are doing. To heck with the scale.
