Guest guest
To help my son learn to chew I taught him how to chew gum...it was a controlled environment and in the beginning he could only chew gum sitting in front of me....this way learned how to move the gum around his mouth...and he only ever swallowed one piece of gum...now he is learning how to blow bubbles with bubble gum....Always sugarfree gum. Guest guest
<< Do these kids learn to chew at an older age, or do they stay on baby food forever >> Eddie is approaching 5 years old and still has trouble chewing. Most of his food is oatmeal consistency. He'll sometimes chew and swallow soft foods, such as a french fry or a bean. Often, though, he'll bite it / play with it and then spit it out. He really likes sliced bananas, but he doesn't always chew it, just mushes it in his mouth before swallowing. Feeding therapy has really helped (his therapist can even get him to eat pieces of chicken!). Its been a long journey but he's come so far. He wasn't able to swallow even smooth baby food two years ago without the help of his bottle. Joanne
Guest guest
when wes was 8 he started mimicking a chew he would watch us eat and move his mouth how we where on the outside. he still does not chew things well inside. mostly he mashes things with his toung.. if we remind him he can figure out how to use his teeth some what but that is hard for him as his teeth dont line up well. wesley can handle a hamburger, but not tough meats or raw veggies. the eating stuff sure seemed like we where getting no where then flash he was eating. For a while now he has been able to take totally smooth stuff such as some icecreams and yoghurt. He then managed some of the little bottles of 3 month baby food of fruit and custard. Over the past week he has managed to down a couple of bottles of the baby vegies and meat.- a big step forward to getting him off his pump!!! We have a little over a year to achieve this. It now looks possible thank God!! Presumably the cranial nerves are still developing. Question: Chewing. Do these kids learn to chew at an older age, or do they stay on baby food forever. I don't recall reading anything about this before - probably because there was, til now, no need for me to?? God bless, Bruce --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
