Our son started riding when he was 3 years old. At first

he fought having the helmet on. His first lesson lasted 10

minutes because he fought the helmet so hard. He cried the

whole time. The next week we were ready for a fight with the

helmets and he went in to the tack room and put the helmet on

by himself. It took a few times before he had the stamina to last

the whole hour on the horse. He loved riding horses and knew

he had to wear a helmet in order to go near the horses. He had

very very bad balance. Two winters ago we enrolled him in snow

skiing. We were worried about his balance but he proved our

worries wrong. He took off and it improved his balance ten fold.

He looks forward to snow every year. He skis the easy trails from

the top of the mountain and is sad when his 2 hour lesson is

over. He wears helmets when he skis as well. For him skiing

was better for his balance than horseback riding. I do think the

riding helped prepare him for the upper body control needed for

skiing.

a,

The skiing is a great idea! We live in Cincinnati, Ohio, so we don't have much

skiing nearby, but there is a little slope with man-made snow in town that's

open in the winter, so maybe we'll try that this winter. won't feel all

alone on the balance problems, either, as her Dad and I have never skiied

either! :-)
