Guest guest
Ann- Good point about needing extra instruction outside of regular school hours or the regular calendar. For those familiar with US law, doesn't " extended school year " mean longer days, longer calendar, whatever it takes? I mean, if the child's IEP requires more than can be done in the regular amount of time, can't there be summer instruction in keyboarding or afterschool? Or be in the regular classroom with a modified schedule -- get the instruction with the group but do sometime different during " work " time? I'm sure there are other ideas. Am I on the right track? Guest guest
Extended school year is tricky. Each district of course interprets it differently. In the law there are many criteria to determine if a child needs it, most districts focus only on if the child will regress during the time they are off for the summer. Then they provide service, such as OT one day a week for an hour a day - here it is really a joke. I would have to pull out my slaw and my Partners in Policymaking books to find the specifics. Guest guest
I'm going to research ESY also. I remember specifically, and I think it was the s Law training, someone saying that ESY means extended day, extended calendar, whatever. In an IEP meeting when we were discussing computer etc, I used that basically to say that there is " dead " time in all kids' school days. But Aubrie can't afford any " dead " time. She has an aid so that she can use every minute wisely. When she has down time, she needs to get on the computer, do her handwriting, whatever. And if they couldn't make good use of the time, then it would be a shame to tack it on to the end of the day. And I used the ESY meaning ESday. No one corrected me on it and they quickly made plans to get it done during the day. Hmmm... Michele W
