Guest guest
,Just wanted to say that drawing blood has been traumatic for us too but I am a regular pain in the butt and I ring ahead every time and explain his anxieties over and over until they get it. They always make an extra effort, have extra time allowed, they bring in the toys, have a clown ready, they have one extra nurse that helps to hold him if needed but usually ends up blowing bubbles to help relax him. I also have to get myself in the right frame of mind as I am so scared so I try to do everything not to show him my anxiety. Ring well in advance and even go so far as to ask if they have written it all down so that the staff on the day understand what is involved. Be nice but remember this is your child and you are his advokat! There are going to be times when you need his blood in order to help him so try to work through the anxieties. I really do know how hard it is and this is mean't to be encouragement and support. :-)Good luck. :-)Subject: Re: How much is too much for their kidneys? To: mb12 valtrex Date: Tuesday, January 26, 2010, 3:29 PM I would love to do that but there is no way I would survive. My son has never had blood drawn and I can't imagine doing it He has only had a needle one time which was for the SPECT scan and it was quite traumatic. I do beleive we need to get baseline blood drawn and certainly if it were medicaly necessary obviously I would but it doesn't seem AS necessary just to check. Okay yes I'm being a baby I know! He is uncontrollable when it comes to stuff like that. I think it goes back to his preemie NICU days- he was born at 3.9 lbs- he doesn't like anyone doing any of that stuff and there is no bribing or tolerating you can get him to do. But you are right regular testing would be one way to do it-I hate labs though- thats where all the sick people are SHannon > > Check kidney functions (and liver) via blood test on a regular basis. > > > > Pamela > > > > From: mb12 valtrex@ yahoogroups. com [mailto:mb12 valtrex@ yahoogroups. com] On > Behalf Of S > Sent: Sunday, January 24, 2010 10:24 PM > To: mb12 valtrex@ yahoogroups. com > Subject: How much is too much for their kidneys? > > > > > > I don't know if this has been brought up before but I am concerned about how > much is too much for the liver and kidneys to filter? Guest guest
...ask about the use of Lidocaine prior to blood draw. My son always got his drawn @ Children's Healthcare of Atlanta & they always recommend it. They will place lidocaine on the area of insertion and wrap the arm with plastic. You will have to wait 30 min. I would NEVER have blood drawn from my kids without it. He sits there and watch tv while 5 or more vials are drawn as if he doesn't feel it....Easy!ValenciaSent from my iPhone ,Just wanted to say that drawing blood has been traumatic for us too but I am a regular pain in the butt and I ring ahead every time and explain his anxieties over and over until they get it. Guest guest
I know they can be tough. We surely have been through that. However, tests provide real answers so you are not just stabbing away in the dark. Try giving your son something to relax him first, a supplement or a med. That's what we do and you may find they don't need it after a while. For that matter, take something yourself if you need it.
