, Whitney has had stints in her nose twice, and after they remove the

stints, she has an excessive amount of secretions. The thing that worked the

best for her was a lot of saline, (we get a prescription for the pink packets of

saline because I can shoot it up her nose with greater force than anything

else over the counter), and we have a suction machine that we use the mushroom

tipped catheter as to not damage the inside of her nose with deep suctioning.

We do this at least twice a day sometimes more, when her secretions are bad.

This seems to prevent the pneumonia and allow her nose a break from running all

day. For us, it got better after a few months after surgery, but she still

has episodes as her reflux acts up. I hope this helps.

Aubrie did not have choanal atresia, so I may be speaking a bit out of

turn here. I notice the conversation about saline sprays for nasal

secretions. Our holistic dr directed me to xylitol nasal spray to help

with congestion in Aubrie's sinuses and ears. It's basically saline

solution with xylitol added that is supposed to help reduce infections.

Studies have shown that it reduces ear infections as well as dental

caries. The xylitol gets eaten by the bacteria in your nasal cavity,

mouth, ear, etc but, because xylitol is not a typical sugar, the

bacteria get sort of like indigestion. Then they can't reproduce and

can't hold on to the membranes in the body and are more easily secreted

in the mucous. You can search " xylitol nasal spray " or the specific

brand name " Xlear " for more info. It's quite a bit more expensive --

like $15 per bottle v. $2 for generic saline. We used it for a short

time but quit when the weather improved. Aubrie hated having it

squirted up her nose so I stopped since it's not critical for her.
