Guest guest
I can't help you with the Dr issue, but YES, you really should try (not try - DO) this diet. It is the first and only thing that has normalize Luke's stools and in his own words, " The tummy doesn't hurt " . All that, plus neurological and behavioral improvements, and he is gradually showing evidence that his phenol sensitivity is healing as well. Be sure to get the latest printing of the book (2004) with the info on Autism. And welcome! in NC Mom of Luke, age 5, Asperger's/low-salicylate; , age 3; and , 23 mos All SCD since 1/26/04 should we try this diet? I have a 3 ½ year old son with autism and we started the GFCF diet six months ago per instructions of our DAN doctor. I have not seen any changes in his chronic loose bowel movements since we started the diet and since we have treated him with an antifungal. I'm also supplementing the basic items on the DAN protocol and am giving him probiotics as well. His OAT test (post-antifungal treatment) shows he is still high in arabinose even though I cut out apple products from his diet a few months before the test. I'm a bit frustrated that my doctor is just giving him the standard protocol and not looking at why his bowel movements are still unformed for the most part. I'm curious about this diet and wonder what led others to follow it. Also, does anyone know a DAN doctor in the Ohio/Western PA area that really spends time looking and examining his/her patients rather than just interviewing the parents??? Guest guest
" ...what led others to follow it " My son was following the gfcf diet with great success....BUT his stool was yellow/orange and had a totally wrong smell. PLUS the most important thing, he was simply NOT growing. This for me was an indication that he did not use his food. So if he did not use his food, how could he ever be using all those supplements. I came across a post on 'recoveredkids'(I am forever grateful to the mom who posted there) that mentioned this diet. I did not hesitate to order Breaking The Vicious Cycle. I read the book and it did not make sense to me. My husband read the book and convinced me. After two days 100% scd (we did not go slow), his stool was dark, formed and had an almost normal smell. After 4 months he reached a very important milestone (asking questions, we never managed to teach him). After about 6 months we saw him growing. And he hasn't stopped growing. Now, after more than a year, he has reached many more milestones. He is healthier than ever. He has gained a handsome couple of kilos. In the swimming pool he is not the skinniest kid anymore. It always broke my heart. Not anymore.
