Guest guest Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 Hi Rick, I think this is a very appropriate topic for the list. Symlin is very new and most people have never heard of it. It's not available in Canada. I find it interesting to read about. Have you had difficulties with lows? I've read that some people on it can drop extremely low and find those lows harder to treat. Guest guest Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 Actually, according to the website, Symlin is for type 1s or type 2s who take insulin. Symlin is an analog of the hormone amylin, which is produced by the beta cells of the pancreas. Thus, those of us with type 1 are actually missing two hormones -- insulin and amylin -- and it is part of the reason we have problems controlling after-meal blood sugars even with carbohydrate counting. Type 2s whose pancreases have " burnt out " enough that they aren't producing enough insulin, probably are also not producing enough amylin. There is also speculation that type 2s are " amylin resistant " in the same way that they can be insulin resistant. Byetta is for type 2s whether they take insulin or not. I'm not entirely sure how Byetta differs from Symlin. Even though they do many of the same things, Byetta is not a synthetic version of amylin as Symlin is.
