Hello everyone,

Pam Greer here. Contrary to popular belief I WAS NOT on the roller coaster

at Carowinds when it wouldn't stop and ran into the other train. Since I

mentioned y'all all watching for me on the 11 o'clock news s the " jaws of

life " tried to extricate me from Thunder Road, I was more than a little

shocked (Twilight Zone theme should play in the background while I recount

this......)to hear about a roller coaster accident at Carowinds.

Those of you who read any of my posts prior to the Carowinds trip know how

much I was dreading the experience because I was afraid I couldn't fit on

any of the rides, much less walk around for 6-7 hours.

Sunday, April 4, 1999 goes down in my book as a major milestone. Not only

did I fit on ALL THE RIDES, but I didn't even have to rent a wheelchair to

ride around in after 6 hours. (I'll tell y'all about the day after

later....).

This trip was part of my daughter 's 17th birthday present and she

really wanted me to be able to enjoy the day. We even rode the new stand-up

roller coaster and Top Gun twice.

The best thing about the day was the frozen lemonade slushy I had. Talk

about wishing you could bottle something!!!!!

We stopped for supper on the way home at Quincy's. I ate 1 yeast roll (yes,

with honey butter....I figured I had earned it) and two bites of baked

potato and I was stuffed. My poodles (at least the two female adults) now

are ceritfiably obese......they love all the leftovers.

I totally agree with Carolyn and Merritt about telling everyone about the

surgery and playing the " I'm not hungry right now....game to explain your

bird appetite.....if they weren't close enough friends, family for you to

discuss the procedure with first hand.....they don't need to know all the

particulars. Let our secret be our secret.......all of the MGB subscribers

know how you feel, let the others wonder and be amazed. Just smile and say

" Thank You " when they comment on your drastic weight loss. If they keep

pressing you for details just borrow my favorite Tom Cruise line from Top

Gun, " I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you.....laugh and walk

away letting them wonder.

I am going to unsubscribe to OSSG ( I forgot to turn it off before this

weekend and I now have 451 new messages). I am slowly working my way

through them, but it may take awhile. Anyway, my true support group are the

MGB crowd, so I'm reading those first. If I forget to answer someone,

please re-send the message and I'll know by the date to answer.

I'm going by my Dr.'s office tomorrow to weigh. I'll keep you posted.

PS: To Merritt: When you get to the part of your posts that detail how

much more weight you've lost please put a note that says " Pam Greer, do not

read beyond this point " . I think your weight loss is fantastic (and so much

better than mine, only 50 lbs as of 3/31) but I wish my success was as good

since our surgery was on the same day, I feel like you and I are closest for

comparison purposes.

I am going clothes shopping next week, that will be Milestone # 3, we'll see

how it goes.

Kathy--

I agree with you and Nan. For years I can remember either being looked at in

negative ways or totally ignored as if I were invisible. It always hurt to

be considered a nonperson. Because I'm really a great person and enjoy life.

I want to educate some of those ignorant people to what being obese is

really about and maybe help them learn to see that what they're doing is

wrong and hurtful.

I agree with you about the surgery secret. I can understand why people

would do this also, but not me. I am actually proud of myself for

taking control of my life and health. So far, everyone has been

supportive = even the normal weight friends. I guess I am lucky.

I think that we to help other people understand that morbid obesity is

not a matter of will power but a disease that we need medical treatment

for. I relate it to an alcoholic or drug addict. Some people can drink

and it not be a problem, but others become alcoholic. The problem is we

can't quite food cold turkey, therefore we need the medical help.

Maybe I am way off base from other overweight people, but this is how I

feel. I see no reason for hiding a " medical condition " , of course,

growing up fat has caused me to not worry about what other people think

(at least not too much). I am glad you expressed your opinion.

I'm worried about an upcoming amuzement park trip...what size fits into the

rides? I wear a size 22-24 and weigh about 230....but the tail spread is

quite wide!

What's the largest most of these rides fit?

Pam...YOU CRACK ME UP!!

GOSH! I wish we'd met while we were in the hospital together!!!!

I'm hoping that like you, I'll have a good experience to report in a couple

of weeks when I attempts a few rides at Disneyworld. Heck...if I can fit

through that thingy that you have to SQUEEZE through to get counted and show

your ticket, I'll be thrilled!! (What do you call those things anyway??) I

can't wait till I can try the rides at Carowinds too. I've been many times

but never ridden any of them. Now...to the weight loss comparing

issue....how can I put this nicely?.....STOP IT!!! :) When you start to

think that you're not losing quickly enough, add up how much you're losing

in a week (on average) and you'll realize how ridiculous it is to feel that

way. You've lost over 50 pounds in 3 months..for heaven's sake!! That's

awesome!! People lose weight differently for many different reasons.

That's why I don't feel bad posting my loss, because this isn't a race and

to try to compare weight loss rates is like comparing apples and

oranges..NO..I don't like that analogy...let's say bananas

and..um...pickles. There's that's better! :)

I may lose 100 pounds quickly but then stop losing at that point. While

someone else may take longer to lose the 100 but then lose another 50 or

100. We shouldn't compare each other. I post my loss for the pre ops who

want to know that this serious decision for surgery is really worth

considering. I remember getting great encouragement from the weight loss

posts of the post ops while I battled with my insurance for a year.

So...anyway. One more thing I wanted to say. You and I feel like keeping

our surgery private. And I think that just like many medical conditions

that people have that they'd rather not share with the world, we shouldn't

feel obligated to share our medical situation if we'd rather not. But I

know that there are those who will want to share their surgery with others

and that's wonderful too. I agree with you that it's a really individual

decision. Boy...sorry this got so long. I'm awfully gabby today, aren't I?

Take care.

Well if it helps any I rode a carosel horse last summer and I weighed at

least 275 lbs then. It still went up and down like normal. Maybe a little

strained, but it did it's job!

Dear Art & Meritt and Bypass Friends,

Maybe it's a good thing we didn't meet while we were in the hospital. I'm

not sure that laughter would have been the best medicine considering our

staples......

The thingy at amusement parks that you have to go through is called a

" turnstile " . ( I always thought of them as a modern day version of " stocks "

like in Pilgrim days, where only your head and hands fit through and

everyone stares as you are publicly humiliated. ) Personally I think they

were invented by skinny, mean people. I used to plan on " lifting up my

stomach apron " and " throwing it over " the turnstile just so I could get in.

You feel like cattle anyway, going through all those lines so I figured if I

could get that much of me over the turnstile, gravity would help with the

rest.

I know, I know....stop comparing. I'll try. I do like your comparison

analogies of bananas and pickles ---think long and skinny as opposed to

round, round, round, (and in the case of the orange...dimpled, dimpled,

dimpled)

I am beginning to be a bit more open about my surgery as more and more

people comment on the changes....(wouldn't you know that my husband's family

has made no comment at all......now I am sure I did the right thing by not

telling them the real reason for my surgery...although the problems I was

experiencing before are pretty much gone now too.

If I think hearing my story will help someone else I'll be glad to share,

but I reserve the right to choose who will benefit from my experience. Alot

depends on how they approach the subject. I take it on a case by case

basis. But I do find it interesting that (based on posts here and OSSG)

those of us who are " weight challenged " find it more difficult to share the

WLS option with extended family than we do with others.....I wonder what

Freud would say?

I'm not giving up, but I am getting ready to go to my Doctor's office and

weigh. I don't know whether to be excited or depressed. I'll let you know

later.

PS. We had a combined birthday party for my daughter and her best friend

(our unofficially adopted daughter who lives with us) yesterday at the

skating rink. I actually put on skates and walked (?), Hobbled (?) but

definitely did not glide around the rink for 3-4 laps. That was enough for

me. But I did enjoy being able to bend over and tie the skates myself.

This isn't what I started to tell you here, but I digress......Yesterday at

the party I ate 2 Dill Pickles (you know, the big kind you get at movie

theatres) and I think that's the best thing I've tasted in weeks....so your

analogy was not only appropriate, but it made me hungry...now the only

question is do I eat the pickle before or after I weigh in? How much do

you think a pickle weighs?

Tara...Good for You for not letting his big mouth make you get off and miss

out on your favorite ride! I think he should have been concerned about

falling out because he was a skinny little girly-man! LOL Sorry, I

couldn't resist...I know it's not good to make fun of skinny people

either...buuuuttt...people with attitudes are a different story...after all,

they can decide what stupid thing comes out of their mouths! Does anyone

know how much weight a carousel horse can take? I've wanted to ride with my

daughter so badly, but been afraid the horse would just sit at the floor

GRINDING LOUDLY, begging to be put out of its misery...

Just a joke:

Two snakes were slithering up the hill. One looked at the other and asked

" ? Are we poisonous? " answered " I dunno. Why? " The other

replied " Cuz I think I thust bid thy thongue! "

ha ha??

ha ha??
