In the December 2003 edition of CPT Assistant, on page 6, the AMA gives an

example of providing manual therapy for 25 minutes. In this example, the AMA

states it is their intent that the provider would bill 2 units of manual therapy

as a substantial portion of the 30 minutes was utilized performing this

procedure. They also say that though that is their intent, insurance payers may

request that these services be reported differently

and rounded up to 8 loosely meets the " substantial " definition of at least more

than half. Isn't this one of the original reasons that the timed rule came to

be?
