Guest guest
I finally started SCD for my son on Thursday. I wanted to do the intro diet strictly, but he eats so few of those foods and he requires a ton of food. We did pretty well the first three days - chicken, more chicken, turkey and more chicken. He spat out the sneaky pancakes, the homemade soup, scrambled eggs, the applesauce and the pearsauce. He squished the jello in his hands. I did give him a ripe banana (which he SHOCKED me by eating since he hasn't done so in 3 years) because the poor little guy had zero energy. He ran a slight fever, was lethargic, and had light brownish, yeasty-looking soft but not loose stool. By day 4, he was so desperate for raw fruit that I let him have a small bit of watermelon. when he finished, he said " more wa -me - yen " I was so blown away. I didn't even know he knew the word and he has definitely never said it. He also asked for tomato ( " I want ma-do " ) which he hasn't eaten or said in over a year. My question is this - since he will not eat ANY cooked fruits or vegetables, and since he clearly needs some carbs in his diet, should I allow him to have small bits of raw fruit? He doesn't have D or C. After a 3 week course of anti-fungal, he had perfect solid poops every other day. In only 4 days, he is calmer and has uttered a few new words. I don't want to turn food into a giant struggle, but I want to do this in a way that will help him. What would you do? Thanks in advance. (mom to (5, ASD) and Hanna (7, NT)); SCD day 5! Guest guest
I think you've done the intro for long enough. As long as Luke's stools remain formed, I am able to give him peeled raw ripe pears, and even golden delicious apples but not every day. All veggies have to be cooked, for him, still, though. I don't know if this is bad advice to be giving you so early on, or not, but Luke never ate the cooked fruit so I was sort of in your shoes. Other veterans with much more SCD-time under their belt will have more input/advice. So glad to hear of his progress already - congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!! in NC, USA mom to Luke, 5, Asperger's/low-salicylate; , 3;,22 mos; SCD since 1/26/04 What would you do? > I finally started SCD for my son on Thursday. Guest guest
I too was and am in your shoes. Sam won't eat cooked fruit either and hates the very ripe bananas. He might eat one or two per week - other than those in his muffins. He won't go near an avocado at all. I let him have a peeled, seeded, really ripe pear every other day or less. Last week we had a binge on melon because I was lost for snack ideas, but his behavior was significantly worse for it so I will not be doing that again. It's a sensory issue for Sam. He spit out the soup, sneaky pancakes, eggy things, chicken croquettes and tots, pear sauce too. We did OK on carbs with cooked carrots, lemonade and watered down pineapple juice. You can cook fruit (even melon,) puree and make popsicles. This is what I am going to do from now on with our melon instead. Definately reach some sort of compromise while doing what's right for you child. The 2 or 3 raw pears a week for Sam are enough to keep him happy and not upset his system. If he had some everyday, I know we'd run into problems. He can't do any raw veggies at this point either. good luck! Two bits of advice don't add too many new things at a time and start with small amounts and work up if no bad after effects. Sounds like things are going great!
