Guest guest Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 I just had mine put in. They did a general anesthesia on me, and now nothing seems to be working in my body anymore. I am also in a great deal of pain. Quote
Guest guest Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 When I had my fistula surgery, they gave me a prescription for a painkiller. I forget which one (although I think it had codeine in it), but I never had to get it filled. , I hope the pain subsides soon, as I think it will, but can't you take a painkiller in the meantime? Guest guest Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 Hi , Pain in the stomach area is probably not related to IgAN. Could it be a reaction to the pain meds you are taking after the fistula surgery? It is worth putting a call into your doctor just to be sure. Feel better and I hope you can sleep well tonight! Quote
Guest guest Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 I didn't know about the flank pain. What does it feel like because I have allot of pain in my stomach area also? I was referring to the pain of, and the complications from, the fistula surgery. Thanks for caring. This group is great! Thanks to Pierre also for starting it!!! > Hi , > > I am sorry you have been in so much pain. Guest guest Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 They gave me pain medicine (hydroconone/tylenol mix), but I can't take it because it makes me so constipated. I had to drink 10 ounces of magnesium citrate today. I don't know if you have ever tasted it, but it not a pleasant experience by any means. That did the trick though, but I am now scared to take the pain meds. The pain has subsided quite a bit since earlier today. I do not know why it was so painfull then and it is not so much now. I don't know how I am going to react to all these physical hardships. I am not a real rugged kind of guy physically, although to look at me you might not know it. I hope they don't have to tear me up too much more in the near future. I had to go back into the emergency room yesterday to get a foley catheter put in, due to the effects of the general anesthesia. It made my bladder stop reacting normally for some reason. I feel allot better now, but I want to get the thing out of there as it is kind of annoying. Have you ever heard of this, and if so how long did it take for the person's bladder to go back to normal function? Even though you said nobody that you know of goes on a full time work schedule when on hemo, I would like to be a crazy/tough SOB and try it. Listen to me! The one who is not rugged talking like a bad ass...lol! Think I can do it? > When I had my fistula surgery, they gave me a prescription for a painkiller. > I forget which one (although I think it had codeine in it), but I never had > to get it filled. > > , I hope the pain subsides soon, as I think it will, but can't you > take a painkiller in the meantime? > > Pierre > > Re: Fistula Surgery > > > > Hi , > > > > I am sorry you have been in so much pain. Guest guest Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 I'm glad to hear your surgery is over with but sorry to hear about the pain. I can empathize right now as I'm still unable to really move my mouth and things just feel all whacked out internally too. My neph said I would feel off for at least a few days after the tonsillectomy just due to the anesthesia metabolizing out of my system let alone from the fact that I had parts cut out. Did they give you a Rx for pain? I've been taking my pain meds fairly regularly for the tonsil thing even if I'm not feeling horridly sore just to help keep my b/p down. I have a tendency to let the pain get BAD before I take anything and then my b/p goes thru the roof making me feel worse. Hope things start to improve for you soon. Sometimes the whole mental part of surgery can get you feeling off too..ya know just the thought of what you just had done. Hang in there and be sure to give the doc a ring if you start to feel really bad. Amy Fistula Surgery > I just had mine put in. When I used to work as a CNA we had quite a few people who needed a short term catheter put in after surgery. It normally was only left for a few days until the body has a chance to recover from the effects of the anesthesia. I thought I was going to need one after mine as I was hardly peeing anything, within 24 hours though I was back to normal. The bowels thing isn't working well for me right now but I've also been on a liquid diet for the past 3 days. Have you tried just plain old Tylenol for the pain? It might take the edge off of it enough without messing up the intestines. As for the physical hardships, take them as they come. I've had to learn not to look ahead at what I " might " face but to just handle each step as it hits you. Mentally I'm finding it easier to cope that way. Just having the strength day to day to live with chronic illness is a toll on the body in and of itself. Having support here and elsewhere in your life is a great help. My husband works with a guy who is on hemo and works full time...has been doing it for years. He works graveyard shift so that he can go to the dialysis center after work and sleep while he is hooked up. He goes in 3 times a week and though has to take some sick time over the years he seems to be handling it quite well. It's been nice since my husband has been able to talk to him about things going on with me. Amy Quote
Guest guest Posted February 9, 2004 Report Posted February 9, 2004 Thanks for your input. I have been feeling kind of bad for the past few days, as well as having to deal with the problems of being reassigned to a new 'post'. I take tylenol for the pain, but that doesn't even seem to touch it for some reason. It is not really an 'excruciating' kind of pain either, just sort of the medium intensity annoying kind. Maybe I just have a high threshold to pain, and don't recognise it as a major pain, I don't know! They prescribed hydroconone/tylenol tablets as a pain med, and these work a little. I went back in to see the nurse about the pain, and she said everything looks great at the incision site, and the shunt is flowing normally. Apparently, she says, the pain is 'normal' after surgery? I don't feel like this should be normal for such a minor surgery. Anyone else ever have this much pain after fistula surgery? The deal with the catheter was a complete nightmare that I am not even going to go into at this point as I don't want to scare anyone. Suffice it to say the VA screwed up bigtime on that one! I have heard of people suing and winning a settlement for less. I hope I can work while on dialysis, because I heard that the amount the US govt. pays for a disability is nowhere near enough for most people to keep up with their day to day finances. I am wondering if they pay more for people who are married than they do if one is single? Anyone know the answer to this for sure? Please feel free to comment if you do. On top of all that (above), the company I work for has reassigned me to the most physically (and mentally) demanding 'post' that they have, to work a 40 hour week. It seems I can't win for losing. > . I had to go back into the emergency room yesterday to > > get a foley catheter put in, due to the effects of the general > > anesthesia. Guest guest Posted February 9, 2004 Report Posted February 9, 2004 Oh , You have been having quite a time of it haven't you. I am sorry that I don't have the answers to your questions, but I just wanted to say I hope the pain gets better very soon. Quote
Guest guest Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 The pain has subsided a little, but it still hurts quite a bit. I wonder if, and when, it will stop. My nurse said it takes a while for the pain to go away. Appreciate your concern very much . > Oh , > > You have been having quite a time of it haven't you.
