Guest guest
I have also brought our homemade hotdogs to a restaurant and asked them to microwave them. I have never had a problem when I explain my son's allergies. karen
Guest guest
Hey Jody: 'what are the Scooby waffles to make sandwiches? Thanks Penny Going out to eat/packing meals and snacks There are a couple of restaurants that are locally owned that make all of their food from scratch that I have allowed my boys to eat. But for the vast majority of the time, I just pack a nice meal for my boys and take it with us when we are going to be out. I think maybe we should discuss what some of us " veterans " do to make this diet easier " on the road " . One thing works well for us is the First Years travel bowls that I posted a link to a few weeks ago. They come in 4 and 8oz sizes and they do not leak. They are dishwasher safe, but they are inexensive and not such a loss if you lose on (like a Tupperware bowl). What is helpful is to pack these bowls with the items that you make from scratch. When you make applesauce, yogurt, etc., jus fill these small bowls up and stack them in you fridge. Then after the initial filling up the bowls time frame, it's like having ready-made food. The containers are the same size as the ready-made items in the stores. Those ready-made applesauce containers are 4 oz. The same with the fruit cups. Yogurt comes in 8 oz cartons. So, although it may seem like a real pain in the neck to fill the containers up... if you make several dishes 1 or 2 times a week and invest in several sets of those little bowls (only about $2.50 per set), you can save yourself a lot of time and headaches for the whole rest of the week. I use pancakes (or my new Scooby waffles) to make sandwiches for the boys. You can make a couple of batches of them and stick them in the freezer. When you are going out for the day, you can just put 2 in the fridge to thaw overnight and the next morning you can make a sandwich and pack it in a container. My boys like sneaky veggie pancakes with nut butter inside, chicken pancakes with avocado inside, mixed nut pancakes with chicken salad inside, etc. All of the sneaky meats can be frozen as well. This is how I managed to pack enough SCD foods for 4 people for 7 days on our trip to DC. I made several different types of meats with veggies mixed in them and then froze them wrapped individually in Saran Wrap, then in freezer bags. They reheat very nicely and then you have food on hand all the time. All of the SCD baked goods freeze well too. After your baked items have cooled, wrap them individually in Saran Wrap and then place in freezer ziplock bags. They defrost pretty quickly. IF you pack a frozen muffin, it will thaw by lunch. I know that sometimes it is very hard to " get ahead " by making food in advance and storing it in an easy-to-use way. But if you think about the stress reduction in the long run, it really does pay to make stuff up ahead of time. With some frozen pancakes or baked goods, frozen meat patties with veggies in them, some premade bowls of cooked fruits and yogurt on hand all the time, it would not take 10 minutes to pack an SCD lunch and dinner for your child. You just need a small cooler and some ice packs to keep the food cold. I even pack small paper plates in the bag. Then you would have the freedom to go out and do things, including going out to eat or to the park, museum, playland or whatever without the hassle of trying to cook for an hour or two before you leave. Guest guest
Penny, I bought a Scooby Doo waffle maker at WalMart for $10. Best $10 spent in quite a while...LOL. Rather than making waffles with lots of ridges (traditional ones), this makes more of a pancake in the shape of Scooby Doo. There is a picture of the waffle maker and a waffle from it on the pecanbread yahoo group. Here is a link to it. http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/pecanbread/lst Using this waffle maker is SOOO much easier than making pancakes. It doesn't take me any longer and they all turn out perfect. No squished or impossible-to-turn-over pancakes. Guest guest
http://www.esalton.com/ Type in Scooby Doo into the search box. You will find the Scooby Waffle maker there. You may be able to find it someplace else too. But this was the quickest place. Jody mom to -
