Guest guest
How exactly does an organization become effective? How does it become strong? Any benefit a member might receive is either being paid for the membership dues, or is being offered to the group because of their size. The Texas Association of EMT's tried the local chapter thing, but it never got off the ground- even though a few local chapters were formed. What exactly can a group or 30 or 40 local members accomplish if they are not part of a larger, stronger organization? EMSAT hasn't done much- what can it do when it represents only a small fraction of a group? What can it do without your help- without the support of many others like you? There is no organization that can or will represent EMS in the way that EMSAT proposes- at all levels of political issues. What would be the benefit to you at the local or regional level if your concerns were valid, and you had the backing of an organization that had the strength of 40,000 mambers statewide? Consider the possibilities if we (or enough of us) lend our support to such an organization- consider the influence a unified voice of 30 to 40 thousand members could have in Austin. Consider the other possibilities that such an organization might be able to offer- or might be offered by others to the groups members. Have you ever seen what happens when two or more health insurance companies are bidding for the business of say, a municipality? There is fierce competition to win the contract for providing insurance to a group of 5,000 city employees. Insurance will still cost you, but they're willing to offer much more affordable rates and better benefits when they;re pitching to a large group. Heard of employee-owned credit unions? If you have enough people, such a thing is quite possible- and guess what? Financial institutions don't cost one dime to operate. Banking is big business, and the owners reap the benefits. Low cost loans, higher interest earnings, profit sharing... Does EMSAT offer anything like this? Of course not, it's a ground level campaign. EMSAT can only guarantee you ONE thing- that it will never be an effective organization without your support, and the support of many others like you. It has, however, won the endorsement of the National Association of EMT's as the Texas chapter/ or nearest equivalent. There is no other. Join today- give this organization your support, at least for say, two years. During that time, do what you can to help the organization to grow- so that it can be effective for its members. The decide whether you've squandered your money to a worthless cause. If it comes down to that, then I guess we have collectively spoken, and have said that we'd just rather roll over and go back to sleep. Guest guest
Ron, I'll add 1-2 things if I may. All EMSAT members receive a $10,000 LDD Policy, they get 25% of NAEMT Dues if they wish to join them, and if they do they get another LDD Policy from the same folks - VFIS. The $10,000 policy, and 25% of NAEMT is worth the $35. We have also ran discount membership drives the first 2-4 years at the EMS Conference for $20, and you didn't have to be present. We have a EMSAT Conference Planning Committee working on a possible EMSAT Conference. We have a full time lobbyist. We have a Part Time Coordinator. We have a Website Committee working on improving our website to be more attractive and more inviting to potential new members. We will have EMSAT Board members at EMS Stock. We were the first EMS Group to testify at the TDH BEM hearings in Arlington. The fact is I can spend hours and hours more of my free time trying to undo the bad image that Mike wants to portray, but I don't listen or pay attention to Mike because he's good at the talking part of EMS, but I don't see him doing the walking, and that takes $35 and volunteer work in a structured way. If I'm correct he got him self thrown off the TEMSF Board. How did he become the first President of it anyway. Why didn't he take that group and do all the things he bashes everyone else for doing or not doing. All I've seen out of Mike helping EMS is a BIG MOUTH that's like an Eveready battery. I will also add the information Mike has posted about the so called telemarketing is totally inaccurate. So as I said in another post " there he goes again " overloading his Alligator mouth with his hummingbird _ _ _ May sound harsh, but when you attack folks and look for a fight you'll find it every single time without a doubt. So in the words of another man " BRING IT ON " , because you have now attacked me and what I'm doing and that makes it personnal with me Mickey. Ron H. Guest guest
Ron, this was VERY well said. I think it is very unfortunate that there are those in our profession who cannot see past their daily activities or even past their own narrowed agendas to look at the WHOLE picture and try to be a positive part of that picture. I was one of those people in the past. I am no LONGER one of those people and have learned that making things happen on a statewide basis is based on individual participation in meetings, discussions such as this one, political discussions with appropriate people, and through belonging to your professional association (whether or not you agree 100% with everything and everyone). I personally did not understand the telemarketing thing myself when I first knew about it, which was BEFORE I joined EMSAT or became a Board member. However, when I took the time to analyze the whole thing and ask questions, I realized that MANY associations and organizations who have been around and were established YEARS ago use this method to help raise needed funds for designated activities. It is a legitimate form of fund raising which is with a reputable company who has NUMEROUS professional clients, so I no longer have a problem with it. I will reiterate what Ron Mason and others have stated in e-mails in reply to the current EMSAT bashing and say that either you are a part of the problem in EMS, or you are going to be a part of an eventual solution. But until folks come to grips with the issues and their own attitudes toward those issues (whether it be what is going on politically in the EMS industry or whatever), then NO organization will flourish in this state - local chapters or not. That is why that plan as well as others mentioned didn't work in the past. We seem to have problems in our industry with folks coming together and forming partnerships and organizations that can effectively accomplish anything because we spend WAY too much time trying to tear each other down. EMS folks typically are VERY Type A, very opinionated, and very critical of others - many times not justly so. I have been guilty of that myself and try very hard to objectively look at all sides of an issue and ask questions of people in the know, etc. before I become a negative force regarding issues. The biggest step toward that goal in my own personal life was swallowing my pride after I had been a negative force and joining EMSAT and becoming involved all the way to the state offices instead of spending my time and energy trying to turn folks away from something that has turned out to be a positive light in such a chaotic profession. Jane Hill For me, I have seen up close and personal accomplishments of EMSAT, GETAC, TAA and others - especially within the last two years. ALL of these organizations overlap in areas and usually end up working together toward common goals, but the only one of the bunch that is designed for YOU, the EMS certificant/Licensee, is EMSAT. ----------

Ron, I was interested in this post and the information that you were presenting until you mentioned Mike and again started in on him personally. The above is what I read and I could go no further. Though you made some good points above, they were all lost when I reached that fateful sentence. Please listen to those of reason and stop the attacks. Debating and arguing is good, name calling and blame-placing are bad. MIke
