I am trying to be an advocate for EMS, using the skills, talents, and

education that I have. Each of us do have a role to play in advocacy for EMS.

Currently, the role I play is one of education and advocacy from the legal side.

Yet

I find my attempts stymied by know-nothings who think that the status quo is

preferable to striving for excellence.

You say you don't need my resume, yet you feel the need to tell me how

overworked you are. Isn't this like the little boys who say that their father

can

beat up the other kids' fathers? Such immature ranting are among the things that

doom EMS to being another " wannabe " public safety field. But since you want

to go down that road, I'll ask you to compare the support that you receive on

this list to the support that others receive for their views. Being alone

doesn't always make you right. And you can't be a martyr if you are only

sacrificing yourself for ego rather than principle.

You said it -- you resent me. Do you resent my education? Do you resent that

I worked hard to get where I am? Do you resent my very presence on this list?

Fine. I will not go away from this list merely because I step on the toes of

the complacent, the lazy, and the ignorant. I believe that this is a public

forum, not just a " chat and chew " for some clowns to compare the size of their

egos and how overworked they are.

I refuse to engage in a battle of wits with the unarmed. The blatant and

frequent spelling errors show you for what you are -- a cancerous tumor eating

at

the heart of EMS's growth as a profession. Your lack of education and

unwillingness to progress hamper EACH AND EVERY EMS professional in Texas as

they seek

to advance. When you are in the emergency room, like it or not, you are a

representative of every other medic in Texas. Your unprofessional actions and

attitudes are telling other medical professionals as well as the public that EMS

is " not ready for prime time. "

Mr. Young, this will be the last of your posts that I ever reply to. I only

pray that my family and friends, should they ever be injured, receive more

professional care than you are capable of giving. And I sincerely hope that you

wake up to reality before it comes crashing in upon you like you so richly

deserve.

But hey, that's ok -- you don't like lawyers. God help you find one when you

are a defendant.

I know this is strange, a doctor defending a lawyer--but, before criticizing

Wes, consider his work. Wes is a lawyer (not an EMT or paramedic) who has

developed a special love and interest for EMS and will find a way to be an

integral part of EMS in Texas. He provides cogent, well-organized, and

pertinent comments on many topics. He has assisteed me as an EMS legal

expert on a JEMS article (and will be doing more). That is part of what

makes the Texas list so good--you have participation from 2-3 EMS attorneys.

His post on professionalism was right on. Don't shoot the messenger and

avoid the ad hominen attacks--in the case of Counselor Ogilvie, trying to

discredit the claim by discrediting the claimant is akin to pissing in the

wind. God knows we need a dozen Wes Ogilvies, Gene Gandys and Luthers

(although I would prefer them standing on my side of the court room!) You

can see these three demonstrate their craft at EMStock in May. Place your

silly rhetoric aside and come to EMStock and discuss this over chili and a

camp fire.

Ours is a useful trade, a worthy calling: with all its lightness and

frivolity it has one serious purpose, one aim, one specialty, and it is

constant to it--the deriding of shams, the exposure of pretentious

falsities, the laughing of stupid superstitions out of existence; and that

whoso is by instinct engaged in this sort of warfare is the natural enemy of

royalties, nobilities, privileges and all kindred swindles, and the natural

friend of human rights and human liberties.
