Guest guest
Dear Group, I will be transitioning my 5 year old daughter with ASD from a GF/CF/SF diet to SCD as soon as I can (am at the DAN! conference today...hubby is at home feeding dd french fries, I am sure). What I would like to know is what kind of reactions might I expect to see. I'd like to be prepared to handle die off, behavioral reactions, etc. What is the range of reactions to this transition and what has helped with those reactions? My daughter has always been the one whose system over-reacts to each intervention we've tried, no matter how hard we tried to start small. Thank you in advance. I'm SOOOO glad to have this group as a resource as I start this new phase of our journey with my beautiful, vulnerable spirit-child. Sincerely, Carla Hancock
Guest guest
Some typical die off reactions as the bad bacteria resist extinction: dark circles under the eyes, irritability, changes in bowel habits increased behaviors and sometimes flu like symptoms. What's a poor Mom or Dad to do? Don't worry You are not trying to kill your lovely child and if you can tough it out, good results may be seen as early as three weeks into the diet. There is a popular saying on the Internet, " Your mileage may vary. (YMMV) Some have noticed positive changes within days others soldier on for months, ask if they should give up and suddenly a change occurs. Patience and compliance are essential. Usually there is great celebration and a happy story to share once this critical beginning phases out. I'm sure others who have survived this and gone on to progress will offer their stories. > Dear Group, > > I will be transitioning my 5 year old daughter with ASD from a > GF/CF/SF diet to SCD as soon as I can (am at the DAN! conference > today...hubby is at home feeding dd french fries, I am sure). We are all very excited to hear all the updates from the SCD contingent there. Now, please understand - I'm getting ready to point you in the direction of our fabulous website created by one of our moderators, Jody G. with a lot of help and contributions from many people on this list. I'm doing this, not to brush you off or avoid answering your questions. The thing is, with the DAN! conference going on right now, we are gearing up for a huge influx of list members and need to be a little efficient with answering the initial questions. So, I'm going to be taking stuff off the website and including links and I hope that the info is helpful. It is not meant to make you work harder for an answer - if you have a question - PLEASE come here! We are all here to help you. With that said, here is just the tiny introduction to the transitioning page on the site. This page has a ton of very good info for transitioning along with some specific stuff for former GFCF families. Take a look and let us know if you have some more questions. http://www.pecanbread.com/foodprep.html#transition " Transitioning a Child to the SCD Broadly speaking, there are two ways to go about this: cold turkey or gradual. What you choose depends on your child and your circumstances. However, regardless of what you decide, here are some tips that can make the transition a smooth one. When his offending foods were taken out once and for all he was extremely furious, looking to start arguments, fights, intimidation. I never saw any change in bowel, but then again he is now nine years old and can take care of that all by himself. He hasn't reported any change. I just know that when he responded to my request to please go back and wash his hands after using the bathroom and he ran to wash instead of arguing with me for half and hour, the boy was feeling better! At first I had to follow him around the house like a toddler - I couldn't trust him to himself for one minute. Now things are much better. Until yesterday when he drank way too much juice and today he's been a real pill. I'd like to know how long to expect that myself! But I know that really, I have to wait and find out I know, its no fun when you want the answer so quickly!

The main things to help with the adjustment are activated charcoal, epsom salt baths, lots of rest and love. Please also see http://pecanbread.com/badreaction.html you'll have to scroll down a little. > My daughter has always been the one whose > system over-reacts to each intervention we've tried, no matter how > hard we tried to start small. > There is lots of other information on the website for those starting out especially these sections: http://www.pecanbread.com/ (Top ten SCD faqs) http://pecanbread.com/foodprep.html#transition http://pecanbread.com/foodprep.html#intro http://pecanbread.com/foodprep.html#menu (For after the intro) and http://pecanbread.com/recipes.html Hope this helps.
