That is interesting that he has narrowed the reference ranges.. sounds

like a smart man.

I think my TSH level means I'm hypothroid... I get the two mixed up

some though.

Always something... You might be slightly anemic from the surgery. My

first red blood count after surgery was low.... then it came up again.

I think there is a " normal " range for all tests... although I don't

think any of these normal levels are set in stone. I have done so

much research lately just trying to understand lab test results. I

have found that now that I get copies of all my labs, I am much more

knowledgeable when I discuss things with doctors. (although some of

them probably don't like us to be knowledgeable).

It is good that you keep track of your numbers.... knowledge is power.

Wow , your TSH is much much higher than mine ever has been. I had to find the right doctor to treat mine. Have you had a TPO test run (or antibodies)? If that comes back showing you are have an auto-immune issue with your thyroid, I would get on something soon to help. Like Patty said, the lower the number the better. She does best around 0. Mine is finally around 1.0 and I feel so much better mentally and physically (bones, joints, and less hair loss). My family doctor wouldn't treat me either but I went to another doctor who would based on my TPO. Lynn

One doctor told me that my ANA could have been high because of my thyoid. Hashimotos is a auto-immune disorder and can easily cause the ANA to be abnormal. My body was fighting and killing my thyroid. Since getting my thryoid hormones leveled out with synthroid, my depression is GONE (knock on wood).

I hope you can find somebody to prescribe you medicine. Some doctors won't until they feel you are "hypo" but there are other doctors who don't believe you have to be hypo to treat.

I know it has ahereditary component. They might say it is the lupus causing theseproblems but I believe it is something different.I'll keep you posted. Thanks so much for this info! I have felt for some time that I might

have thyroid problems. My father was hypothyroid and I saw his

symptoms. Quest diagnostics labeled my test in the " normal " range! I

really didn't question it until today when I looked at my TSH number

and began reading about all this online.

I hope I don't offend my doctor too much on Thurs when I tell him that

it really isn't " normal " .

Yes, it is a blood test to tell what foods your allergic to.

If your TSH is 4.87, you are NOT NORMAL!! You are hypothyroid and you

need help.

They did the same thing to my mother. I told her to ask the doctor to

flip back through her records and see what her TSH was several years

ago. Sure enough, it had changed for the worse. When I told her to

push the issue and tell them to consider that when it changes for the

worse, she is going to feel it, they relented and gave her armour

thyroid. She felt much better!

I would push this . Tell them that even if they think this

number seems normal, if you were at a 2.0 (for instance) several

years ago, and you are now 4.87, you are going to feel hypothyroid!

You need to get this treated. Also point out to them that untreated

hypothyroidism can lead to heart issues. See if that doesn't put a

little fire under their butts.

When you ask your doctor to test for thyroid antibodies, make sure

you request TWO antibody tests--one is called the anti-TPO antibody

test and the other is the Anti-thyroglobulin antibody test or TgAB.

One can be out of range while the other is normal, which is why you

need BOTH test to see if you have an autoimmune thyroid disease.

I bet your doctor will be impressed that you are requesting

specifics! I hope you are treated well....some docs are threatened

by knowledgeable patients.

- Yeah, since all of this started, I sure have taken control of

my health and become much more knowledgable. My husband always tells

me that no one is going to be in charge of my health except for

me....he is right!

I have Kaiser for insurance, so I can just log into their site and

get all of my lab info right off of my personal health page, it's

nice that they do that.

I was also thinking that my RBC might be low from the surgery. We're

going to check it again in a month and see if it's gone up.

Thanks Patty,

I'm going to push this tomorrow when I see the doctor. I don't have

tyroid tests from other years. My doctor in Denver would listen to

your heart take your temp and that was the extent of the physical. I

had this last tyroid test done here at my request, then they said it

was normal. hmmmmm.

I'll let you know what happens tomorrow.

Thanks. I'm writing this all down so I have everything I need to

remember. I appreciate all your knowledge on this. I didn't know

enough when this was done to question the " normal " diagnosis.

I know my rheumatologist does not want me to have any knowledge or ask

questions. The internist I'll see tomorrow, I like and I think he

will be open to my requests. I hope so.
