Guest guest
Helen - First off, we SO know how you feel!!!! SCD will get better, but there are hurdles and bumps and things to learn all along the way. You'll feel much more clear on the whole thing once your book comes, but until then, pour over the websites, you'll learn a good bit there. On the juice - I can think of a couple things. If it wasn't Welch's 100% then it might not have been legal. Also, Elaine says to water juice down. Another thing to consider, though - and I sure don't want to confuse you here as a newcomer, but have you ever heard of phenols or Feingold? Basically, some of us here are working on what we call " leaky gut " , which is one of the main reasons we are doing SCD so religously! One symptom of a leaky gut is to not tolerate phenols/salicylates in foods, and so we also have to loosely follow what some refer to as " Feingold diet " , and the only reason I bring it up is because the way your son was behaving - angry, irritable, etc, is how Luke behaves when he gets those things. Grape juice is high and very much effects him, so it made me think of that. NOW - your main focus here is to get SCD going because that is where long-term healing and good digestion will come from!!!!!!!! And huge kudo's for taking the whole family SCD!! But as you're beginning and waiting for that long term healing to occur inside your son, you might be on the lookout for bad phenol reactions to things especially high like grapes, almonds, tomato sauces, etc. Some parents use an enzyme called no-phenol to counter this, others like me just limit the intake of such things. Many parents report that after time on SCD their kids can now tolerate those foods without the bad behavioral reactions, which to me sounds like an answer to prayer! Well, I hope I haven't added to your confusion, but if you'd like to learn more about this there are many posts on it, in the archives, just do a search. And like you, I much prefer prayers over luck, so I've said one for you tonight!!!!!!!!!! I'm so excite that the word on SCD is reaching more parents, and so glad all of you newcomers are with us, I hardly know what to do! From another frazzled mom who just drove to the grocery at midnight to buy eggs because I HAVE to make sandwich buns tonight........... in NC, USA mom to Luke, 5, Asperger's/low-salicylate; , 3;,22 mos; SCD going since 1/26/
Guest guest
" We seemed to be doing so well last week! He was finally happy again. After a month of hot dogs and french fries, I emailed my DAN! doctor franticly about his behaviors and she told me about the SCD diet. We tried it and things got better as the week progressed. Until Friday. He drank lots of grapejuice. I assumed it was only grape juice because of the label, but I don't know if it was too much sugar, illegals in the juice, too much grapes, I don't know, but I can hardly stand it/him!! He is so angry again! " Sounds to me it could very well be some die-off. While you are waiting for the book, the website www.pecanbread.com will be your guide. Recipes can be found there, but also on www.scdrecipe.com. Bear in mind that in the first stage of SCD, the intro diet plays a huge role. It is the best start. On www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info you can find more about the intro diet. For the intro diet, you do not need many recipes. The behaviour you describe fits the pattern. As you may have noticed, there are some moms that either fully join their kids in SCD, or even the whole family. I did it too, partly. I also experienced restlessness, cravings, irritation. This lasted about 10 days. You can do it. Marjan Netherlands
